KANSAS CITY, MO. (May 21, 2018) – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the competitor list for the 38th annual Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. The meet is set to take place on May 24-26 in Gulf Shores, Ala., at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
Representing Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in the national championships will be Miki Romain (SO/Round Rock, Texas). Last season, Romain participated in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships hosted in Johnson City, Tenn. She etched her name in history by being one of the first individuals to qualify and participate at the national championship meet.
Head Coach Stephen Sherman stated, "Making it to a national collegiate championship meet in track in field, whether it be the NAIA, NCAA, etc., is really quite an amazing feat especially when considering it in the proper context. The reality is it is one of a handful of sports where qualification is purely based on the individual and all of the pressure that it entails. If you make it to the championship meet you are unequivocally one of the very best in the country at whatever event(s) you compete in."
This season, Romain qualified for the outdoor national championship meet by participating in the Texas Relays sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin. She will be participating in the 100m hurdles at the meet.
Sherman commented, "We are incredibly proud of Miki and her accomplishments. She qualified for the indoor meet last year, but missed out on qualifying for outdoor. I think she had a bit to prove this year and got into the meet, but she still has a lot to prove at the meet itself. That said, she has worked incredibly hard and Coach Smith has done an amazing job with her, so we are confident she is going to take it to the next level."
The NAIA National Championship is set to begin on Thursday, May 24 at 10 a.m. CDT for the men competitors and 10:30 a.m. CDT for the women competitors. Opening ceremonies will take place that same day at 2 p.m.
Stretch Internet, the NAIA's official video-streaming company of NAIA national championship events, will be broadcasting the events on www.NAIANetwork.com. A subscription package to view the entire three-day event is $19.95.
