KANSAS CITY, MO. (May 27, 2018) – The NAIA announced the men's track and field student-athletes, who have been named 2018 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. Our Lady of the Lake University's (OLLU) Derek Barnett (SR/Redlands, Calif.) was among the honorees. He also received NAIA Scholar Athlete recognition in cross-country.
In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended two full years as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer.
Barnett, a senior majoring in history, earned a 3.74. He is the first male track and field and cross-country student-athlete to earn NAIA Scholar Athlete recognition.
He joined the Saints team in the 2016-2017 academic year, and this year, he played his last as a member of the track team.
