KANSAS CITY, MO. (July 20, 2018) – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the teams that have earned the distinction for Scholar-Teams for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) proudly boasts seven teams earning this honor – the most in school history.
OLLU's NAIA Scholar Teams are: Women's Cross-Country, Soccer, Softball, Track and Field and Volleyball; Men's Baseball, Soccer and Tennis.
Last season, the men's golf and tennis teams and the women's soccer, softball and volleyball teams earned Scholar Team recognition. In 2016, the Scholar Teams were women's soccer, softball and volleyball and men's golf, and in 2015, women's soccer, cross-country, softball and track and field and men's golf were recipients.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
The Saints women's cross-country team earned OLLU's highest GPA of 3.41. The squad consisted of seven student-athletes, five of whom had GPAs over 3.0 including graduate student Ione Rodriguez, who earned a 4.0. Others included seniors Jazmine Garcia and Gabriela Guerrero, junior Sarah Taylor and freshman Andrea Gandara. This is the second time the team has earned scholar team recognition.
Softball has earned its fourth consecutive Scholar Team award with a GPA of 3.32. Of the 15 2018 team members, nine earned GPAs over 3.0 including seniors Cheyanne Carter, Kimberly Chaves, Taylor Doege, Alexis Macias, Kristina Tiffany and Ina Trejo, and freshman Jalin Oliva-St. Romain. Senior Lauren Guerra and freshman Madeline Wolken marked 4.0 GPAs.
Earning its third consecutive Scholar Team award with a GPA of 3.31 is volleyball. Seven of the 12 team members earned GPAs over 3.0 including freshman Lauren Cameron who marked a 4.0. Others included juniors Mariza Cardenas and Divinity Gonzales, sophomore Anyssa Rivera, and freshmen Bailei Hubbard, Elizabeth Olivarez and Anissa Tamez.
Women's track and field records its second Scholar Team award with a 3.28 GPA. Eleven of the 16 team members earned GPAs of 3.0 and up, including graduate student Ione Rodriguez, who marked a 4.0. Others included freshmen Maricela Castro, Amanda Esparza and Andrea Gandara; sophomores Aundrea Culliver and Miki Romain; junior Samantha Millan and Sarah Taylor; and seniors Jazmine Garcia, Gabriela Guerrero and Shenaya Thomas.
Women's soccer earns its fourth consecutive Scholar Team award with an overall 3.18. Earning 3.0 and above include freshmen Maya Aguilera, Savannah Hernandez, Victoria Morales and Baye Polansky; sophomores Maryssa Garza, Amber Hadfield and Brandi Lugo; juniors Whitney Clark, Brooke Cousins and Erica Robertson; and senior Maggie Miller. Junior Mako Tembo earned a 4.0.
Men's tennis had a 3.18 GPA to earn its second consecutive Scholar Team award. Among the seven team members, senior Mathias Rocha, junior Abraham Cantu, sophomore Warren Fulgenzi and freshman Estevan Trujillo earned GPAs of 3.0 and above.
Earning their first-ever Scholar Team awards are OLLU's largest teams – baseball with a 3.05 and men's soccer with a 3.03.
Of baseball's 30 team members, 15 boasted GPAs of 3.0 and above. These include freshmen Ryan Chapa, Jorge Collazo Jr., Logan Garza, Adrian Gonzalez Jr., Jacob Mitchell and Triston Scherer; sophomores Matt Mihalov and Robert Lopez; junior Ryan Ramsey; and seniors Russell Brown, JB Martinez, Caleb Mireles, Enrique Ruiz III and Jesus Ramirez. Freshman Alex Garza earned a 4.0 GPA.
Ten of 23 men's soccer team members earned 3.0 GPAs and above. These include sophomores Giovanni Cardenas and Guillermo Serrano; Juniors Adam Bieker, Adrian Delgado, Nick Genthon, James Halpin; and seniors A.J. Gonzalez, Roger Rizzi and Luis Sanchez. Graduate student Jorge Cavazos earned a 4.0 GPA.
