SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 22, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team played a slugfest against Huston-Tillotson University this afternoon and after two overtime periods, the game ended with a 2-2 tie.
The Saints move to 3-1-2 and 0-0-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while HTU is now 1-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference.
The Saints have played the Rams 16 times since 2007 and have won seven games. The last time the Saints lost to HTU was last season 1-2.
OLLU – 3' – Adrian Delgado (SR/Brownsville, Texas), Assist by Adam Bieker (SR/McAllen, Texas)
OLLU – 54' – Jose Barraza (SR/El Paso, Texas), Assist by Norberto Lira (FR/Monterrey, NL, Mexico)
HTU – 61' – Marcos Escobar, Assist by Edgar Vazquez
HTU – 64' – Marcos Escobar
With rain-drenched field conditions, the match between the two teams quickly became a slugfest. Early on, it looked as if the Saints would have the advantage as Adrian Delgado quickly got OLLU on the board with a goal on a pass from Adam Bieker in the third minute.
Both teams spent an equal amount of time on their sides of the field, but neither could add another goal as the first half ended.
The Rams already recorded 12 fouls, compared to five for the Saints to end the first period. Their passion continued in the second half. The Saints had hoped their second goal, on a shot from Jose Barraza at the 54th minute would guide the Saints to a victory. But it was clear the Rams were not giving up as Marcos Escobar scored on an assist by Edgar Vazquez. Escobar scored the equalizer in the 64th minute.
After regulation time had expired, frustration was at an all-time high for both teams. They carried their fury into the first overtime period and on to the second one. The Saints thought they had scored after the ball seemingly went into the net, but the referee saw a different scenario. Unfortunately, time had expired and the game ended with a draw.
At the conclusion of the game, in a show of good faith by both teams and in true demonstration of Champions of Character, the men gathered on the field to congratulate each other. They joined hands and prayed for a successful season.
