The basics
The Saints could not find their rhythm in the first half. They gave the Celts a lot of room to succeed, and they were able to put the first ball through the net after nine minutes had passed. After a foul from OLLU's Carlos Cabrera (SO/Mission, Texas), Edwin Saldivar was able to shoot the ball in on a free kick to put the Celts up 1-0.
The Saints had two shots go wide and high from Juan Martin Chica (FR/Cali, Colombia) and Cabrera, while the Celts got the ball back to their side of the field quickly. Joshua Lockhart was able to get the ball into the net on a pass from Saldivar to put the Celts up 2-0 at the 18th minute.
Five minutes later, Carlos Marquez shot the ball in on another assist from Saldivar to give the Celts the 3-0 lead.
OLLU's Miguel Sanchez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) subbed in for Jose Delgado (SO/San Antonio, Texas) and immediately provided a spark for the Saints. His shot on goal was inches away from finding the net, and Guillermo Serrano (JR/Grand Prairie, Texas)'s shot was also narrowly saved by UST keeper Omar Lopez.
OLLU's Jesus Cortes (SR/El Paso, Texas) took his turn shooting on goal, followed by another shot from Serrano – both saved by Lopez. Sanchez ended the half with another close shot on goal.
With three strikers in the second half for the Saints, including Matheus Campos, the Saints tried to stage a comeback, and they put up a valiant effort. Campos started the rally after he was fouled, and he shot a free kick that was saved. Adam Bier followed, and Campos tried again, but both shots went wide.
Chica's shot went high, resulting in a corner kick from Campos. Campos followed the corner with an attempt that hit the crossbar. Cabrera was fouled on a rough tackle from UST's Alan Cruz that garnered him a yellow card. Jose Barraza took the free kick and sent it straight into the net for the Saints' first goal of the game.
After 25 minutes had passed, the Celts were able to take their first shot of the half and it was saved by Keelin Garrity (FR/Katy, Texas), who guarded the net in the second half over starting OLLU keeper Jorge Cavazos (SR/McAllen, Texas).
The Saints had three more attempts for the net, but were unsuccessful. At the 80th minute, UST's Carlos Marquez committed a foul, and the free kick was assigned to Campos. That shot was blocked by the UST wall, but Campos immediately got a hold of the ball and kicked it again, this time for the goal.
Matheus Campos appeared to have scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute, but it was called back on an offsides call. The Saints took several more shots, but time ran out and the Celtics won 3-2.
Inside the box score
Leading the way for the Saints' offense was Campos, who took six shots, two on goal. As a team, the Saints tallied 19 shots, 10 on goal.
