NEW ORLEANS (Nov. 5, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team opened its 2018-2019 campaign with a 93-85 nonconference loss to Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO). The Saints are now 0-1, while SUNO moves to 2-3.
Head Coach Chris Dial commented, "Our guys played hard and stuck together. Despite these guys putting us in a position to win this game, we made too many errors along the way. Lots to learn from our first game together and everyone is eager to get back to work tomorrow."
The Knights jumped on the board first with a field goal, and OLLU's Michael Saladin (JR/Beaumont, Texas) followed quickly with a 3-pointer. He followed with another three and a field goal, but the Knights stayed close to tie the game at eight. Lennox Jones Jr. (JR/Richmond, Texas) was able to give the Saints their largest lead of the game at 23-16. SUNO went on a 6-0 run to come within one at 23-22. A three from SUNO's Marcel Daniels gave the team the 29-26 lead, and the Knights kept pushing through the rest of the half to lead by a game high of 10 at 39-29. Saladin's third three of the period got the Saints to within seven and a shot from Darin Minniefield (SO/Houston, Texas) moved the score to 39-34. The Knights pushed ahead to a 10-point lead again to close out the half with the 49-39 lead.
OLLU's Ethan White (SO/San Antonio, Texas) shot the second half's first basket, a three, to get the Saints under double-digits. The Knights returned to a 12-point lead, and a three from Minniefield sparked some momentum for the Saints as they got to within five at 54-49. With less than 11 minutes left in the half, the Knights returned to a double-digit lead at 65-52. The Saints were able to get the deficit under double digits again at 71-63 with seven minutes left in the game. The Saints' efforts were not enough to pull off an upset, and the Knights followed through with the 93-85 win.
The Saints featured four players with double-digit scoring led by Lennox Jones Jr. who tallied 23 points with 8-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Ethan White and Darin Minniefield both finished with 19 points, and Michael Saladin had 13.
SUNO's Dimitri Cook led his team with 26 points, followed by Terrance Collins with 15, Kevin Dorsey and Marcel Daniels both with 13 and Darrell Jacob with 10.
OLLU's Jones recorded his first double-double, adding 10 rebounds to his 23 points. He also led the Saints in blocks with two,
SUNO's Marcel Daniels led his team with nine rebounds.
Minniefield led the Saints in assists with five and in steals with three. Daniels led SUNO in assists with six, while Collins and Cook both had three steals.
Inside the box score
OLLU combined for 32-of-75 shooting for 42.7 percent, 14-of-37 from beyond the arc for 37.8 percent, and 7-of-13 from the charity stripe for 53.8 percent. SUNO was 35-of-67 for 52.2 percent, 5-of-15 in 3-point attempts for 33.3 percent, and 18-of-27 free throws for 66.7 percent.
OLLU collected 39 total rebounds, while SUNO tallied 43. OLLU forced 18 turnovers and committed 17.
The Saints will play an exhibition at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi on Nov. 9.
