SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 10, 2018) – After a 12-point first-half deficit, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball got to within three in the third quarter and pushed through an epic fourth quarter to defeat Xavier University of Louisiana 89-74. The Saints improve to 2-0, while the Gold Nuggets suffer their first loss of the season and move to 4-1.
This is the fifth matchup between the two NAIA schools. In the first two games, the Saints won 92-86 in 2013 and 77-76 in 2014. The last three years, the Saints lost 86-91, 67-71 and 65-70.
The Gold Nuggets dominated the first quarter, driving through a 10-4 lead. Jas Hill commanded the floor making three 3-pointers and adding four free throws to lead Xavier with 13 points. OLLU's Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) kept the game close mostly from the charity stripe, making all four from the line and adding a field goal for six points. The Gold Nuggets came out on top to a 30-21 lead.
The momentum stayed with Xavier in the second quarter as Jalyn Hodge gave her team a game-high lead of 15 after sinking a 3-pointer. Their lead remained in double digits through the rest of the period ending the half at 48-36.
OLLU's Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) sank a three to begin the third period to get the Saints to within nine. Saldana drained another three and a field goal from Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) got the Saints to within six at 44-50. With three minutes left in the quarter, Xavier returned to a double-digit lead at 59-49. With the Gold Nuggets leading 61-52, Saldana led the Saints to an eight-point run to close out the third trailing 60-63.
Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) dropped a field goal to open the final period, getting the Saints to within one. Brianna Henson (SR/Dunlap, Ill.)'s made shot gave the Saints their first lead of the game. That spark continued through the remaining eight minutes as the Saints shocked the Gold Nuggets with an unexpected comeback. Okpe led the drive scoring eight points in 10 minutes. She gave the Saints their biggest lead at 18 on a second-chance shot with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) put the final points on the board for the Saints with one of two free throws made and the game ended with the Saints winning 89-74.
Saldana led all scorers with 25 points, including 7-of-11 from the field, 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 8-of-9 free throws. Okpe added 16 points, while White scored 15 and Henson finished with 10. King led the team in rebounds with eight, while Okpe added seven assists and three steals.
Xavier was led by Hill, who scored 16 and both Kyla Duncan and Maya Trench, who added 13 points each. Shaelyn Johnson and Hill added six rebounds each, while Trench finished with five assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 29-of-68 shooting for 42.6 percent, 6-of-16 from beyond the arc for 37.5 percent and 25-of-31 from the charity stripe for 80.6 percent. Xavier was 22-of-65 for 33.8 percent, 7-of-20 in 3-point attempts for 35 percent, and 23-of-31 free throws for 74.2 percent.
OLLU collected 40 total rebounds, while Xavier tallied 42. OLLU forced 21 turnovers and committed 13.
The Saints will travel to Oklahoma for a game against No. 6 Wayland Baptist University on Nov. 16 and against Oklahoma City University on Nov. 17.
