SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 24, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team concluded the Halo Classic with a win against Dillard University (DU). OLLU defeated the Bleu Devils 94-66 and closed out the tournament with two wins. Prior to this game, Oklahoma City University (OCU) defeated Edward Waters College 84-55. OLLU and OCU went undefeated in the Halo Classic, while Dillard and Edward Waters were winless.
This is the fourth time the team has played DU and the Saints now lead the series 3-1. The teams' first couple of matchups came in 2010 with the Saints delivering 70-69 and 68-65 losses to DU. In 2017, the Bleu Devils defeated the Saints 82-73.
OLLU's offense proved to be an offensive threat from the start of the game. The Saints scored 56 points in the first half and an additional 38 points in the second half. Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) sparked the Saints' offensive efforts in the first quarter.
Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) is normally a defensive specialist for the Saints. Tonight, she added another skill to her tool set…leading scorer. She came off the bench to generate some key points that propelled the team to a victory. Playmaker Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) owned her role as a point guard and generated scoring opportunities for her teammates in the victory.
A field goal from Adriiana Jackson jump started the scoring for DU, but their offensive work faltered under the defensive pressure the Saints put forth throughout the game. The Bleu Devils were able to produce 16 points off of turnovers from the Saints, but were unsuccessful in capitalizing on second chance points with seven recorded for the night.
OLLU combined for 36-of-73 shooting for 49.3 percent, 10-of-23 from beyond the arc for 43.4 percent and 20-of-30 from the charity stripe for 66.6 percent. Additionally, the Saints recorded 42 rebounds, 15 steals and forced 28 turnovers.
The Bleu Devils combined for 27-of-69 from the field for 39.1 percent, 0-of-9 from the free throw line, and 14-of-23 from 3-point range. DU also combined for 37 rebounds and nine steals, and they forced 24 turnovers.
OLLU's offense was led by Sheffield. She was 7-of-8 from the field, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Sheffield also recorded seven rebounds. Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) came out strong recording a double-double with 16 rebounds and 13 points. She was 6-of-9 from the field and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe. She also tallied six assists and one block.
The Saints saw another offensive threat in Wilson, who scored 17 points and Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas), who scored 15 points. OLLU's offensive efforts were rounded out by Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) with 12 points, Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) with 10 points and Okpe with 10 points. Additionally, Okpe led the Saints in assists with 10.
Andriiana Jackson led the scoring for the Bleu Devils with 22 points, followed by Alyssa Washington, who tallied 18 points. Asia Partlow added five rebounds in the loss.
OLLU will continue its nonconference schedule with an exhibition game against NCAA DII Lubbock Christian University (LCU) on Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. The Saints will open up their conference schedule with a game against Paul Quinn College in Dallas on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
