LUBBOCK, TEXAS (Dec. 1, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team traveled to Lubbock, Texas for an exhibition game against NCAA DII Lubbock Christian University (LCU). The Saints lost to the Lady Chaps 77-65. OLLU remains 5-1 and the Lady Chaps improve to 7-2.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said," We competed well against a great team. They had one run in the first quarter where we had some critical turnovers. We also didn't shoot well todayt, which is unusual for us. We played a great team and we were pretty even with them for three quarters. We need to value every possession and get serious about the little things. Good thing this game was an exhibition. We should be ready for our conference opener on Thursday night."
Today's game is the third matchup between the Saints and the Lady Chaps, and LCU holds the 3-0 record. In 2009, the Saints fell 67-97 and in 2015, 80-100.
The Saints started the game off by winning the tip off. Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) ignited the offense by making a layup. OLLU forced LCU to turn over the ball and the Saints' offensive capitalized on the miscue with a 3-pointer from Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas). This offensive surge at the beginning of the game pushed the Saints to 5-0 within minutes of the first quarter.
LCU made its way on the board with free throws being made by Allie Schulte. The Lady Chaps continued their offensive run with a layup from Olivia Robertson and two free throws from Kailin Davis. They went on to lead the Saints 26-14.
In the second quarter, the Saints followed up LCU by scoring 18 points. The Lady Chaps kicked off the scoring with a jumper from Maddi Chitsey. OLLU regained control of the offensive surge when Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and White recorded layups. The Saints held the Lady Chaps to 15 points in the second quarter.
During the third quarter, LCU narrowly outscored OLLU 20-19. Scoring in the third quarter came from LCU first with a layup made by Bobbi Chitsey and a 3-pointer recorded for Davis. The Saints answered back with a layup from Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Saldana. The Saints' turnovers proved to detrimental in the third quarter and LCU capitalized on its offensive momentum.
The fourth quarter sealed the win for LCU with the Lady Chaps leading the Saints, 16-14. Starting off the offensive efforts for the Saints was Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) with a layup. King continued the Saints' offensive efforts with a jumper from inside of the paint pushing the Saints to 55-68. A 3-pointer from Saldana ended the Saints' scoring efforts and the Lady Chaps secured their victory with a 3-pointer from Madelyn Turner.
The Saints were led in scoring by King who recorded 15 points and six rebounds. Saldana was another offensive threat for the Saints recording 12 points and four rebounds. White tallied 11 points on the day with six rebounds. Rounding out the offensive efforts for the Saints were Wilson with nine points and Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) with six points.
LCU was led in scoring by Robertson, who had 20 points, followed by Schulte with 18 and Davis with 15. Rebounding efforts were led by Robertson with 13 and M. Chitsey, who recorded eight. Schulte also tallied five assists for LCU.
Inside the box
The Saints shot 27-of-63 from the field for 42.9 percent, 4-of-21 from 3-point range for 19 percent and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line for 63.6 percent. The Lady Chaps shot 26-of-61 from the field for 42.6 percent, 11-of-30 from beyond the arc for 36.7 percent and 14-of-17 from the free-throw line for 82.4 percent. OLLU recorded 29 rebounds, 11 assists and eight steals. LCU tallied 37 rebounds, 20 assists and six steals. The Saints committed 15 turnovers, while the Lady Chaps ended the game with 19.
The Saints are set to open Red River Athletic Conference play on the road against Paul Quinn College. OLLU will take on the Lady Tigers on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Dallas, Texas.
