ESPANOLA, N.M. (Dec. 2, 2018) – Despite turning over the ball just five times while forcing 17 turnovers, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to the Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) Eagles 103-69. The nonconference game moves the Saints to 1-6 while the Eagles improve to 5-7.
Head Coach Chris Dial commented, "This was a tough game in a tough environment, which will help us prepare for similar environments in conference. We did not come out ready to play, and they played with a lot of energy and made shots. We were better in the second half, but put ourselves in too big of a hole to crawl out of. We have an opportunity tonight to play a complete game and continue to improve heading into conference."
This is the forth matchup between the Saints and the Eagles. In 2010, the Saints won 125-103. Last year, the Saints won two games, 91-89 and 104-86, but both games had to be forfeited by OLLU.
The Eagles got on the board first, and Ethan White (SO/San Antonio, Texas) tied the game. Darin Minnifield tied the game again at 5-5. After that, the Eagles powered through to increase their lead to double digits at 16-5. They went up to 20 before the Saints could score their first basket in five minutes. The Eagles pushed to their biggest lead of the half at 56-24 with less than three minutes remaining in the first period. They finished out the half with the 63-33 lead.
The second half showed little difference as NNMC continued to dominating, taking their biggest lead of the game at the three-minute mark, 101-62. The Saints scored seven straight points, and the Eagles made the last shot of the game to secure their 103-69 win.
Zachary Mucha (SO/El Paso, Texas) led the Saints in scoring with 15 points. He made 5-of-12 from the field, 3-of-10 from 3-point range and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. Michael Saladin (JR/Beaumont, Texas) added 13 points, while Ethan White scored 12. Darin Minniefield and Mucha led the Saints in rebounding with five each. Brandon Joseph (SR/Houston, Texas) added three assists, while Minniefield tallied two steals.
Estevan Martinez led the Eagles in scoring with 19 points. Jose Rodriguez scored 15, Bryce Simmons and Naquwan Solomon added 12 and Seth Warfield tallied 10. Martinez and Tyrique Weaver recorded eight rebounds each. Makye Richard tallied four assists.
