TYLER, TEXAS (Dec. 8, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University's (OLLU) women's basketball team remains undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) after crushing Texas College (TC) 95-55. The Saints improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference, while the Lady Steers drop to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, "This was a good road win. We played better defense this game. We need to work on our mental focus and discipline. I'm not happy with how we reacted to some adversity. Hopefully, we will learn about high expectations, mental discipline and rising above situations that distract us from our goals."
OLLU and TC have faced each other 19 times throughout the years, and the Saints hold the 17-2 record. Last season, the Saints defeated the Lady Steers 95-60.
The Lady Steers started off the scoring in the first quarter with a jump shot made by Paris Townsend. The Saints answered back with two points coming from Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria). Offensive powerhouse Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) had another high-scoring game for the Saints. She started off her scoring efforts off of a TC turnover that resulted in two points for the Saints. The back-and-forth scoring continued throughout the first quarter with the Saints adding 21 points and limiting the Lady Steer's offense to 14 points.
In the second quarter, the Saints dominated TC. OLLU forced a turnover and Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) capitalized on the error by scoring two points for the Saints. The Saints forced TC to turn over the ball, which resulted in Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) scoring for the Saints. Saldana continued her offensive dominance by sinking a 3-pointer for the Saints. OLLU held TC to 16 points, while they scored 26.
Miscues from the Lady Steers at the beginning of the third quarter gave the Saints the upper hand. The Lady Steers turned the ball over four times and the Saints capitalized with seven points being scored. Aukexus Pickens put the Lady Steers on the board with a two-point shot made off of an OLLU turnover. The Saints answered back offensively with both Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) and Saldana making two free throws for the Saints. OLLU recorded 27 points in the third quarter, while TC tallied 11.
The Saints started the fourth quarter with two free throws made by Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.). TC's Taylor Crabtree answered back by making a shot from inside of the paint. OLLU's offense continued to shine with 3-point shots being made by Atkinson-Roach and Casillas. Foul trouble from the Saints provided the Lady Steers with offensive opportunities. Townsend made both of her free-throws for the Lady Steers, while Hicks made 1-of-2. The Saints ended the quarter scoring 21 points and limiting TC to 14.
Leading the offense for the Saints was Saldana with 32 points, just missing the all-time single game record of 34 points, a record she almost broke earlier this season after scoring 33 points. Atkinson-Roach recorded 14 points followed by White with 13 and Casillas with 12. Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) led the rebounding efforts for the Saints with eight and Casillas with seven. White and Sheffield recorded five.
The Lady Steers were led in scoring by Townsend, who had 18 points. Stewart tallied 10 rebounds.
