SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 13, 2018) – For the fourth time this season, the Our Lady of the Lake University's (OLLU) women's basketball team has reached the century mark after defeating the University of St. Thomas (UST) 114-60. The Saints improve to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while the Celts drop to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference.
OLLU is 15-0 against the Celts.
The Saints started the scoring and kept the lead throughout the first quarter. By the half-way mark, they reached a double-digit lead at 12-8 and then went on a 13-0 run to lead 25-8. The Saints forced 11 turnovers while committing just two. Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) led the Saints' offense with 10 points, making 5-of-6 field goals.
In the second quarter, the women took a 21-plus lead after Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) sank a free throw. The game rotated to a 16-20 Saints lead until Saldana drained a shot to get the Saints back up by 21. Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) made her 3-pointer to give the Saints the 59-35 lead with about two minutes left in the half. Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) ended the half with a field goal and the Saints went to the locker room with the 65-37 lead. Miller led the Saints' offense in the second quarter with 11 points, including three 3-pointers and a field goal. Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) dominated on defense as she marked five steals.
With the Saints leading 65-37 to open the third quarter, Sheffield drained a shot to give the Saints their biggest lead of the game at 30. The Saints went on a 13-0 run to pull ahead 81-39. After the Saints went ahead by 43 at 84-41 with five minutes left in the period, Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) made both of her free throws to close out the third quarter with the 92-54 lead. The offense for the Saints was more evenly distributed with two players logging six points and two scoring five points.
In the final period, the Saints continued to dominate, closing out the game with the 114-69 win. Atkinson-Roach scored 10 points for the Saints, making 4-of-6 from the field and two free throws.
Leading the offense for the Saints were Jamia Miller and Samantha Atkinson-Roach, both of whom scored 24 points, followed by Kasey Saldana with 15, Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) with 13 and Patience Okpe had 10.
King led in rebounds with eight, both Okpe and Arkinson-Roach had four assists each and Regina Sheffield marked eight steals.
St. Thomas was led by Alexya Castillo who scored 11, followed by Zariah McInnis and Sheridan Hopkins with 10 points each.
Inside the box
The Saints shot 42-of-72 from the field for 58.3 percent, 8-of-17 from 3-point range for 47.1 percent and 22-of-27 from the free-throw line for 81.5 percent. The Celts shot 21-of-54 from the field for 38.9 percent, 4-of-14 from beyond the arc for 28.6 percent and 23-of-31 from the free-throw line for 74.2 percent.
OLLU recorded 16 turnovers and 23 steals in the victory, while UST committed 29 turnovers with 10 steals.
The Saints will be back in Mabee Gymnasium on Dec. 15 to host Huston-Tillotson University at 5:30 p.m.
