SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 15, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team remains undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference after beating Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) 86-68. The Saints are 4-0 in conference and 9-1 overall, while the Rams are 2-1 and 7-2 overall.
The Saints are 23-1 against the Rams, Their only loss came in 2014, when the Saints dropped their game to the Rams 58-70.
The Saints started the game with several turnovers that put the Rams ahead. The Rams went ahead by two before a field goal by Destinee King tied the game at 7-7. Another basket by King gave the Saints the lead, and they kept the lead through the end of the game. Jamia Miller closed out the scoring for the Saints, and the quarter ended with the Saints leading 30-16.
In the second quarter, the Saints maintained their double-digit lead. Despite the halftime score of 48-33, the Saints scored 18 points, while the Rams logged 17.
The teams came back after the halftime break, and immediately Kasey Saldana was fouled. After making both of her free throws, Dezeree White sank her field goal to pull ahead by 19 at 52-33. A 3-pointer from Saldana gave the Saints their biggest lead of the game at 55-35. Samantha Atkinson-Roach closed out the period with a field goal and the Saints now led 71-54. Once again though, the scoring in the period was fairly close at 23-21.
The Rams opened up the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, but the Saints came back to go on a 9-0 run to lead 82-57. The Rams scored 14 points in the period, while the Saints added 15 points. The first quarter, when the Saints led 30-15, was the catalyst for the Saints' 86-68 win.
All five starters for OLLU scored in double digits, led by Kasey Saldana with 20, followed by Dezeree White with 13, Destinee King with 12, Regina Sheffield with 11 and Patience Okpe with 10. Sheffield added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Okpe and Sheffield tallied four assists, while White had three blocks. Okpe added two steals.
Kryshona Carter scored 11 and Kayla Barber added 10 for HTU. Dominique Randle tallied six rebounds, and Gemma Alhambre had five assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 32-of-74 shooting for 43.2 percent, 6-of-23 from beyond the arc for 26.1 percent and 16-of-20 from the charity stripe for 80.0 percent. HTU was 27-of-64 for 42.2 percent, 8-of-18 in 3-point attempts for 44.4 percent, and 6-of-10 free throws for 60.0 percent.
OLLU collected 41 rebounds, while HTU tallied 34. OLLU forced 20 turnovers and committed 15.
The Saints will travel to Phoenix for the Frontier Challenge Tournament. On Dec. 19, they play the University of Montana-Western, Dec. 20 Rocky Mountain College and Dec. 21 Carroll College.
