PHOENIX (Dec. 19, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team is participating in the Frontier Challenge Tournament hosted by Chandler-Gilbert College in Phoenix. The No. 12 Saints fell to the No. 9 University of Montana-Western (UMW) 57-59. The Saints are now 9-2 overall and the Bulldogs move to 7-0.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, " I am disappointed in how we started the game, but I am pleased with our second half. Not sure if I have ever seen an OLLU team shoot as bad as we did in the first half this afternoon. We had good looks, but we missed 3-point shots, free throws and layups. We cannot play that way against a top 10 team that went to the final four last year. These games make us better if we learn from them. The next two games will be just as tough. Hopefully, we can win one, but we do need to play a lot better. We had a good attempt at a comeback today."
This is the first meeting in program history for both teams.
The Saints came out hot in the first quarter, but were unlucky in their offensive efforts with shots being missed. Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) put the Saints on the board early, but UMW's offense was able to score nine points before the Saints were able to score again. Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) scored from inside of the paint to bring the score to 4-9. Brianna Henson (SR/Dunlap, Ill.) scored the final two points of the quarter bringing the Saints within three points of UMW at 11-14.
In the second quarter, the Saints were outscored by the Bulldogs. Turnovers and missed offensive opportunities are what contributed to the Saints trailing the Bulldogs by 11 points. The quarter started off with turnovers from the Saints, but King got the scoring underway. Scoring efforts in the second quarter were minimal from the Saints, but Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) did record the last three points of the second quarter to end the half with the Saints trailing 24-35.
The third quarter got off to a rocky start for the Saints with Britt Cooper and Cierra Lamey recording the first four points for UMW. Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) answered back with back-to-back 3-point shots. Flores and Atkinson-Roach continued with their hot hands for the rest of the quarter. The Saints were able to score 23 points in the quarter to bring them within 10 points of UMW's lead at 47-57.
A few steals and some turnovers later, Atkinson-Roach put the Saints on the board in the fourth quarter. The Saints scored 10 points in the quarter and held the Bulldogs to two points. White led the charge for the Saints scoring six of the 10 points for the Saints. OLLU pushed through and almost generated enough points for an overtime period, but the Saints were unsuccessful and committed a turnover to end the game with the 57-59 loss.
Flores lead the scoring for the Saints with 12 followed by Atkinson-Roach with 11 points. Rounding out scoring efforts for the Saints were White with eight points, King with eight, Miller with six and Henson with five. King and Sheffield both recorded eight rebounds each in the game.
Scoring efforts for the Bulldogs were led by Brianna King with 20, followed by Savanna Bignell with 10, Lamey with nine and Cooper with eight. Lamey recorded 13 rebounds for the Bulldogs and Cooper added seven.
