PHOENIX (Dec. 20, 2018) – Our Lady of the Lake University's (OLLU) women's basketball team played its second game of the Frontier Challenge Tournament hosted by Chandler-Gilbert College in Phoenix. The No. 12 Saints fell defeated the No. 18 Rocky Mountain College (RMC) 75-63. OLLU moves to 10-2 overall and the Battlin' Bears are now 8-2.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, "This was a much better effort. We played more consistently from the start and made more shots. It was a good team win, and a nice bounce-back win from last night. Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.) came off the bench and was big time for us. Coach Stephens really did a great job with the subs tonight. We got another tough one tomorrow, but overall, I am pleased with the effort tonight.
This is the first meeting for the Saints and RMC.
The first quarter got off to a rough start for the Saints, but Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) was able to shoot a 3-pointer to put the team up 3-0. After a few miscues, the Battlin' Bears were able to tie the game at 9-9 after Kloie Thatcher scored two points. RMC tried to keep up with the explosive offense of the Saints, but their attempts were unsuccessful. Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) ended the first quarter by sinking a 3-pointer to put the Saints up 23-15.
RMC kicked off the scoring in the second quarter and tried to build off of the momentum, but they were unable to withstand the tough defense of the Saints. Markaela Francis made two points for the Battlin' Bears, but the Saints answered back with two points from Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) and a steal from Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria). The Battlin' Bears' offensive attempts were met with defensive rebounds from the likes of King from the Saints. RMC capped off the scoring for second quarter with Justyn Juhl scoring the last two points off of a turnover from the Saints to bring the score to 35-31.
The Saints held onto their lead going into the third quarter. RMC's Francis started off the scoring and Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) answered back for the Saints. The Battlin' Bears tied the game at 45 with a free throw made by Thatcher. Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) answered back by sinking a 3-pointer to push the game to a three-point lead for the Saints. King and Miller kept the offensive threat alive for the Saints by scoring in the remainder of the game. The Saints had a narrow lead at 59-57.
In the fourth quarter, King put the Saints on the board early with a two pointer to bring the score to 61-57 in favor of OLLU. RMC tried to generate a comeback, but they were unsuccessful in their efforts. Their offensive miscues helped the Saints' offense break the game open. Saldana and Miller were once again the offensive threats for the Saints with their hot hands. Alexis Casillas assisted the offensive efforts with a two pointer. In addition, Casillas also sank a 3-pointer with the shot clock dwindling down to one second. The Saints won 75-63.
Saldana and King were the leading scorers for the Saints with 18 points apiece. Wilson added 13 points.
Scoring efforts for the Battlin' Bears were led by Brooke Jones with 19 points followed by Alecia Chamberlin with 15 and Francis with 12.
