PHOENIX (Dec 21, 2018) – The No. 12 ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team suffered a tough 76-55 loss to No. 8 ranked Carroll College. The Saints drop to 10-3 overall, while Carroll improves to 10-3. The Saints concluded the Frontier Challenge Tournament with two losses and one win.
Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, "Unfortunately, we played a really good team on a day they shot and played really well. When a team is shooting unbelievably you have to match their points and energy. We caught Carroll on a day they were on and we were a little sluggish early. This was a good lesson for us going forward on how much harder we need to work in order to beat these teams. We just had a bad first half and could not recover. Good thing it's only December."
The teams have never played each other.
Carroll went up 6-0 before Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) scored the Saints' first basket. The Saints scored three field goals and two free throws, while Carroll closed out the quarter leading 28-8. The eight points is a new record for the fewest points scored in the first quarter. The previous record was 10 against Tarleton State in 2015.
The Saints did not improve in the second quarter. Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas), Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and Atkinson-Roach each scored two points, and the half ended with Carroll ahead 38-14. The six points is also a new record for fewest points scored in th second quarter by the Saints.
The third quarter was an improvement, but the Saints scored four less points at 15-19. Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) led the Saints with six points.
OLLU exploded in the fourth quarter outshooting Carroll by seven points. Alexis Cassillas opened the scoring with a pair of free throws. Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) followed with a three to get the Saints within 25 at 62-37. With two minutes left in the game, Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas)'s free throw got the Saints to within 20 at 73-53. Despite the surge for the Saints, it was not enough and they fell 76-55.
Patience Okpe was the only Saint in double figures with 11 points. Christine Denny scored 22 points for Carroll, while Brittney Johnson added 21 and Danielle Wagner had 13, and she added 11 rebounds.
