ATHERTON, CALIF. (Dec 29, 2018) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team showed its agility and force this afternoon after defeating Valley City State University (VCSU) 86-73 in the Peninsula Classic. The win moves the Saints to 11-3, while VCSU drops to 4-8.
Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, "We pulled out a tough win. Our defensive pressure was the key, forcing 30 turnovers. We needed to adjust to how the game was officiated a little better but we were able to do that in the second half. We really executed down the stretch after being down three with seven minutes left. We dictated the tempo of the game and that was also the key. It should be another tough game tomorrow. We will need to rebound better. We need to play fast again."
This is the first matchup between the No. 12 Saints and the NAIA D2 VCSU.
The Saints got on the board first with eight straight points. A 3-pointer from VSCU was followed by a field goal from Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) and at the six-minute mark, the Saints led 10-3. VCSU made another 3-pointer and it began a 6-0 run. With 16 seconds left in the first quarter, VCSU took over their first lead of the game at 17-16. The lead went back and forth until Brianna Henson (SR/Dunlap, Ill.) sank a layup to give the Saints the 31-29 lead. Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) followed with a three at the 2:46 mark giving the Saints the 36-29 lead. That was capped off by a 6-0 run to move the game to 39-34. The period ended with the Saints leading 42-36.
