SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 5, 2019)– The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team sank the LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) Pilots by the score of 80-57. The Saints improve to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference. LSUS drops to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference.
The No. 14 Saints are 14-11 against LSU-Shreveport.
Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) began the game with a 3-pointer, followed by three missed field goals from the Saints. Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) added a three to move the Saints to 6-0. The Saints continued to climb, dominating the Pilots, who played with five players the entire game. The Pilots threatened a couple of times, getting to within two, but the Saints kept their composure to closed out the first quarter with the 24-13 lead.
After Matt Cross, the LSU-Shreveport coach, was assessed a technical foul, Saldana made one of two free throws. The Saints went up on a high of 19 points just at the end of the quarter. A three from LSUS's Tristen Lasker ended the game with the Saints leading 45-29.
The Saints pushed their lead to 20-plus in the third quarter as they continue to shut down the Pilots. Wilson made the last shot of the period to give the Saints the 65-42 lead.
The teams tied in scoring in the final quarter with both at 15, but the Saints were beyond reach. The Pilots did get off the last shot to end the game with the Saints winning 80-57.
LSUS was led by Fu'tra Banks, who scored 21, followed by Keira Williams with 12 and Sabrina Banks with 10. Williams added 12 rebounds and Banks had 10.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 28-of-74 shooting for 37.8 percent, 10-of-21 from beyond the arc for 47.6 percent and 14-of-16 from the charity stripe for 87.5 percent. LSUS was 22-of-58 for 37.9 percent, 3-of-14 in 3-point attempts for 21.4 percent, and 10-of-17 free throws for 58.8 percent.
OLLU collected 44 rebounds, while LSUS tallied 36. OLLU forced 26 turnovers and committed 18.
The Saints will travel to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M., on Jan. 12.
