HOBBS, N.M. (Jan. 12, 2019)– The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated the University of Southwest (USW) 95-70 in a Red River Athletic Conference matchup. The Saints improve to 14-4 overall and 7-0 in the RRAC. The Mustangs drop to 4-10 overall and 1-6 in conference.
Head Coach Christopher Minner said, "We did what we needed to do. We picked up our defensive effort in the second half. We just need to get better at some defensive rotations. We got to play a lot of people so that was good. We need to focus next week with two road games. Overall, we did our job offensively."
The No. 14 Saints are 18-1 overall against the Mustangs.
In the first half, it took the Saints awhile to find their rhythm. USW's Naomi Solsberry put up the first two points of the game with Aaliyah Wheatfall putting up one point. The Saints started off the scoring with Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) sinking both of her free throws. Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) capped off the Saints' scoring efforts with a two-point play and the Saints led the Mustangs 27-21.
King put the Saints on the board early in the second quarter with two points. Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) added two points to keep the Saints' scoring momentum pushing forward. The offensive power of the Saints pushed the Mustangs to sub players from their bench, but the Saints' offense maintained their hot streak. OLLU held the lead going into the half with a score of 51-39.
The Saints dominated the third quarter with scoring coming from veterans Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) and Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas). USW's Solsberry and Meredith Keasler answered back with two points each for the Mustangs. OLLU continued their offensive dominance with Okpe scoring the final two points of the quarter to bring the score to 80-52.
USW's Desiree Garza and Mykal Thomas put the Mustangs on the board early in the fourth quarter. Their attempts to generate an offensive surge were met with the potent defense of the Saints. Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas), Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.) and Alexis White (FR/Houston, Texas) were able to push the Saints to 95 points falling five short of another 100-point game.
Miller led the way for the Saints' offense with 18 points followed by King with 14, Okpe with 13, Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) with 10 and Flores with 10. Wilson ended the night with six rebounds and Okpe added six assists.
