MARSHALL, TEXAS (Jan. 17, 2019)– In a long awaited conference match up, the No. 11 Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Wiley College (WC) 99-46. The Saints are now 15-4 overall and remain undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference play at 8-0. The Lady Wildcats move to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in conference.
The Saints stand atop the record books in their match ups with WC. OLLU is now 16-5 all-time against the Lady Wildcats.
The first half started off with Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) putting the Saints on the board. Brianna Tolliver answered back by sinking a 3-pointer, but that did not phase the Saints. Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) each scored four points and proved the Saints' offensive dominance. Brianna Henson (SR/Dunlap, Ill.) scored the last two points of the quarter to bring the lead to 22-14 in favor of the Saints.
In the second quarter, the Saints showed why they are a nationally ranked powerhouse by scoring six points before the Lady Wildcats could muster up their offense. Lady Wildcat Colby Hughes finally put her team on the board by making one of her two free throws. Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) sunk the last two points of the quarter and brought the Saints lead to 45-27 at the half.
Damonica Franklin put the Lady Wildcats on the board early with a two, but King and Saldana answered back by scoring a combined five points. An 11-point run by the explosive offense of the Saints put the team up by 29 points. Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) and Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.) capped off the quarter with two points each. The Saints led the Lady Wildcats 71-39 going into the fourth quarter.
A 12-point run by the Saints stretched the lead to 44 points over the Lady Wildcats before Alona Bennett was able to put her team on the board with one of two free throws being made. Tolliver's offensive efforts tried to keep the Lady Wildcats in the game, but the Saints defense shut WC's scoring efforts down. Falling short of the century mark, the Saints scored a quick nine points to end of game with the 99-46 win.
Leading the way for the Saints' offense was Atkinson-Roach with 20 points, followed by Saldana with 17, King with 14, Okpe with 12 and Wilson with 12. King ended the night with 13 rebounds, which resulted in another double-double on the season. Alexis White (FR/Houston, Texas) added six rebounds while Wilson, Casillas and Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) tallied five.
Tolliver led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 19 points followed by Hughes with eight and Franklin with six. Franklin added 10 rebounds.
The Saints combined for 39-of-80 from the field for 48.7 percent, 7-of-15 from three-point range for 46.6 percent, and 14-of-22 from the charity stripe for 63.6 percent. The Lady Wildcats were 14-of-63 form the field for 22.2 percent, 3-of-24 from beyond the arc for 12.5 percent and 15-of-29 from the charity stripe for 51.7 percent. OLLU committed 14 turnovers and forced 33. Additionally, OLLU recorded 46 rebounds and the Lady Wildcats tallied 50.
The Saints will travel to Hawkins, Texas, on Jan. 19 to take on Jarvis Christian College at 5:30 p.m. in a conference contest.
