SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 26, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team completed the season sweep over Texas College after a 128-59 win. The Saints missed by one the overall record for most points scored in a game, which was 129 against Paul Quinn in 2015. The team also tied the overall Saints record for most threes in a game with 18.
The Saints improve to 18-4 overall and 11-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while Texas College drops to 5-14 overall and 3-8 in conference.
The Saints are 16-2 against the Steers. The last time the Saints lost to Texas College was in 2011, 93-101.
The Saints took about four minutes to get situated in the game as they allowed the Lady Steers to take a 6-0 lead. At the six-minute mark, Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) tied the game at six with her free throw. Threes from Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) moved the Saints to 12-6, and another three from Flores pushed the Saints to a double-digit lead at 17-6. The Saints showed little mercy for the Steers as the undefeated in conference team powered through to close out the first quarter with the 31-14 lead.
At the start of the second quarter after a basket from Wilson, the Saints got to a 20-plus lead on a 3-pointer from Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas), 36-14. Toward the end of the half, a three from Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) gave the Saints their first 30-plus lead at 61-31. Texas College ended the half with a field goal to take them into the locker room trailing 33-61.
The Saints maintained their dominance as they got to a 40-plus lead at the eighth minute, 80-39. Flores made a three and a pair of free throws to give the Saints the 91-51 lead. Miller closed out the third quarter with a field goal and the Saints now led 98-45.
The final period was no different as the Saints kept up the momentum. At the seventh minute, Sheffield made the Saints' 60th point to pull ahead 109-49. With less than two minutes left in the game, Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas)'s free throw was the Saints' 70th point. They closed out the game with the 128-59 lead.
Jamia Miller led the Saints in scoring with 23 points, followed by Mikki Flores with 19, Kasey Saldana with 18, Dezeree White with 13, Regina Sheffield with 11 and Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.) with 10. Casillas added 11 rebounds.
Texas College was led by Jazmyne Hicks with 14 points, followed by Taylor Crabtree with 11 points. Dejah Steward had 10 rebounds.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 45-of-82 shooting for 54.9 percent, 18-of-31 from beyond the arc for 58.1 percent and 20-of-22 from the charity stripe for 90.9 percent. Texas College was 18-of-54 for 33.3 percent, 2-of-10 in 3-point attempts for 20.0 percent, and 21-of-32 free throws for 65.6 percent.
OLLU collected 38 rebounds, while Texas College tallied 30. OLLU forced 28 turnovers and committed nine.
The Saints will travel to Houston for a conference game against the University of St. Thomas on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
