HOUSTON (Jan. 31, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated the University of St. Thomas (UST) 81-58 in its second meeting this season. The Saints remain undefeated in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play at 12-0 and are looking to continue their victorious momentum for the six remaining conference matchups. The Celts fall to 5-6 in conference play with an overall record of 8-10.
Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, "It was a rough start offensively tonight, but our defense kept us in it. We had better energy in the second half. We cannot let made/missed baskets dictate our energy. It's always tough to win on the road and we learned that tonight. We need to focus on the little things moving forward. Our depth was a key factor in the victory as well."
The Saints have played and defeated the Celts 15 times. The last time the Saints played the Celts was Dec. 13. OLLU hit the century mark in the victory with a score of 114-69.
The game started off with a few offensive miscues from the Saints, which provided the Celts with the opportunity to jump on the board early with a seven-point lead on the Saints. The offensive dry spell from the Saints was snapped with Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) scoring two baskets. Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) ended the first quarter by scoring four points, but UST's Sheridan Hopkins scored a basket to bring the score to 9-14.
OLLU pulled themselves out of their offensive funk and came to play. The Saints scored 21 points and their defense stopped UST in their tracks by only allowing them to score 13 points in the quarter. UST's Alexya Castillo scored five points and Yazmine Kellough scored two points before the Saints were able to put themselves on the board. In response to UST's offensive efforts, the Saints unleashed their hot hands. Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) scored two points and Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) hit three three-point shots. Alexia Casillas also hit a three-pointer, while Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) scored four points off of free throws. Casillas ended the quarter by making one of two free throws to bring the score to 30-27.
At the start of the third quarter, the Saints showed no mercy. Wilson got the offense started for the Saints after scoring six points. UST's Hopkins answered back by sinking two free throws, but the Saints came back with Saldana and White scoring a combined four points. Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) and White each scored four more points for the Saints. Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) ended the quarter by sinking a three to bring the score to 51-39.
An eight-point offensive run, jump started the fourth quarter for the Saints. Hopkins answered back with a two pointer being made, but it was too little too late for the Celts. A three from White and four points from Okpe brought the score to 64-40. Hopkins put the Celts on the board again by making both of her free throws. Six points from OLLU's Casillas and a two pointer from Alexis White (FR/Houston, Texas) ended the game.
