AUSTIN, TEXAS (Feb. 2, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team proved their dominance with a 105-82 victory over Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) opponent Huston-Tillotson University (HTU). OLLU remains the lone undefeated team in the RRAC and they are the first to qualify for the Raising Canes RRAC Women's Basketball Tournament. After tonight's win, OLLU improves to 13-0 in conference play and 20-4 overall. The Lady Rams drop to 7-5 in conference and 12-7 overall.
Head Coach Christopher Minner stated, "It was a good win in a tough environment. Our offense was consistent and once the defense got focused we were able to pull away. We need to continue to improve on the little things. We have a big road trip next week."
The Saints hold the all-time record for their matchup with the Lady Rams at 23-1. In their last meeting, the Saints were victorious at home with a score of 86-68.
HTU's offense came out hot in the first quarter with Korie Pichon scoring the first three points. That offensive surge was met with Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) scoring two points and Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) sinking a three. Wilson added four more points, while Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) asses two points off of a fast break. To end the quarter, HTU's Gemma Alhambra made two free throws. OLLU's Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) answered back and sank two threes to put the Saints ahead of the Lady Rams 37-20.
Offensive efforts were kicked off by HTU's Kayla Barber, but Brianna Henson (SR/Dunlap, Ill.) answered back with a three for the Saints. A five point run by the Lady Rams was silenced by free throws made by OLLU's Miller followed by a three pointer. Miller and Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) each added two points for the Saints to put the team 14 points ahead of the Lady Rams. Miller added a three and Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) sank two free throws to end the second quarter.
The Saints came out hot in the third quarter with Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) making a two pointer right off the bat. HTU's Taylor Briggs answered back with two points, but Wilson made up for it by sinking a two pointer. A three made by Flores and two free throws made by Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) brought the Saints' lead to 18 points. Sheffield added three points for the Saints, while Wilson added two. OLLU's King added four and Miller sank a three to put the Saints up by 27. HTU's Ilana Sanford answered back with three points and Deijah Henry added two with her free throws. The third quarter ended with HTU's Pichon scoring the last two points of the game, but the Saints led the Lady Rams 87-64.
Henson started off the scoring for the Saints in the fourth quarter with two points and Miller added another three to her stellar performance bringing the scoring to 92-66. Sheffield and Okpe added two points apiece for OLLU. HTU's Dominique Randle added one point by making one of two free throws. The Saints reached the century mark by with two free throws being made by Patience Okpe. Alexis White (FR/Houston, Texas) added two points for the Saints, but HTU's Alhambra answered back with two good free throws. Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.) added three points to end the game.
Leading the offense for OLLU was Miller with 24 points followed by Okpe with 15, Wilson with 16, Sheffield with 10, Henson with nine, Saldana with eight and King with eight. Sheffield added 10 rebounds and King tallied nine.
Alhambra led the offensive efforts of the Lady Rams with 18 points followed by Taylor Briggs with 11, Pichon with nine, Henry with seven, Kayla Barber with seven and Randle with seven. Sanford added eight rebounds and Pichon recorded six.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 37-of-78 from the field for 47.4 percent, 11-of-29 from the three point line for 37.9 percent and 20-of-28 from the charity stripe for 71.4 percent. HTU was 26-of-54 shooting for 48.1 percent, 7-of-16 from beyond the arc for 43.8 percent and 23-of-36 for 63.9 percent from the charity stripe. The Saints collected 37 rebounds, while HTU recorded 42. Additionally, OLLU forced 30 turnovers and only committed 14.
The Saints are set for another road trip, but this time to Louisiana. OLLU is set to take on conference foes LSU-Alexandria on Feb. 7 and LSU-Shreveport on Feb. 9. Both games have a start time of 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast online via https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ollusaints/.
