ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA (Feb. 7, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team fell to Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) foe LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) 87-89. OLLU still remains on top of the RRAC standings at 13-1 with a 20-5 overall record. The Generals improve to 12-2 in conference play and 19-4 overall.
OLLU is 9-1 against the Generals with the lone loss coming in the second half of RRAC play.
The first quarter started off with LSUA's Courtney Dawsey and OLLU's Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) scoring in the first few minutes of the game. OLLU's Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) put the Saints on the board with a two pointer and she made good on her free throw. LSUA's Danyale Bayonne answered back with two points, but King added four points to put the Saints up 9-4. OLLU's Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) came up big with a three and Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) added two to give the Saints a 19-11 cushion. The General's Kelsey Thaxton added three points, Courtney Dawsey added two points and Bayonne added two more. Saldana ended the first quarter by sinking two three pointers to bring the score to 28-24.
LSUA's Bayonne started off the scoring with two points. Okpe added two points for the Saints to bring the lead up to four points. Dawsey and Aja Law added two points each to bring the score to 30-30. Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) subbed in for the Saints and sank a three to give the Saints the lead. Okpe also added two points to bring the score to 35-33. Alexis Harris and Dawsey added free throws for the Generals, which resulted in a score of 36-35. King added two points to bring the score to 37-36 in favor of the Saints. Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) and King added two points each for the Saints to bring the score to 41-42 in favor of the Generals heading into halftime.
OLLU's Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) jump started the Saints' offensive efforts by sinking two points, but LSUA's Thaxton answered back with three. Flores sank a free throw and King added two points to bring the Saints within two of the Generals. LSUA's Brittany Hall added two good free throws and Thaxton put up a three to to put the Generals up by seven. The Saints offence went to work and Wilson sank two free throws, while Okpe added one good free throw and a two-point basket. In the last minute and a half of the third quarter, the Saints added seven points to trail by four heading into the fourth quarter.
In true OLLU offensive fashion, the fourth quarter kicked off with a three beings made by Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas). Okpe added two points for the Saints, but Dawsey added two good free throws to bring the score to 64-64. LSUA's Bayonne added a three to pull the Generals ahead of the Saints, but King answered back with a made free throw and Wilson sank two points to put the Saints on the board. The Saints went on a seven point run before the Generals' offense was able to answer back with a free throw made by Hall. Wilson added two points for the Saints, which resulted in yet another tie at 76-76, but a three from Thaxton pulled the Generals ahead of the Saints 76-79. OLLU's Saldana netted a three to bring the score to a tie once again and LSUA's Natalie Alaniz added a good free throw to put the Generals up by one point. A foul from the Generals resulted in two good free throws from Saldana, which pushed the score to a tied game. LSUA's Hall was fouled and headed to the line to shoot two good free throws and put the Generals ahead of the Saints in the last minute of the game. A three and two good free throws from Saldana pushed the score to 86-88, but the Generals' Bayonne ended the scoring efforts with a good free throw to cap off the victory for LSUA. E'Layzha Bates added nine rebounds followed by Law with eight, Bayonne with seven and Dawsey with six.
Leading the offense for the Saints was Saldana with 25 points followed by Okpe, Wilson and King each with 16 points. King recorded a double double in the game by tallying 19 rebounds. LSUA's offense was led by Thaxton with 26 points followed by Bayonne with 21 and Dawsey with 19.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 31-of-83 from the field for 37.3 percent, 8-of-20 from beyond the arc for 40 percent and 17-of-22 from the charity stripe for 77.3 percent. LSUA was 29-of-68 shooting for 42.6 percent, 8-of-23 in 3-point attempts for 34.8 percent and 23-of-31 free throws for 74.2 percent. The Saints collected 54 rebounds, while the Generals recorded 40.
The Saints will continue their road trip with a RRAC game against LSU-Shreveport on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
