SHREVEPORT, LA. (Feb. 9, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team fell short of the season sweep over LSU-Shreveport (LSUS). OLLU lost to the Pilots 76-79 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) matchup. The Saints now move to 12-2 in RRAC play and 20-6 overall, while LSUS moves to 11-11 in conference play and 9-6 overall.
The Saints are 14-11 all-time against the Pilots. OLLU defeated the Pilots 80-57 in their last match up on Jan. 5.
Fu'tra Banks started the scoring off for LSUS with two points. OLLU's Patience Okpe (JR/Benue, Nigeria) added two points for the Saints to put the team on the board. Sabrina Banks added a three and Keiara Williams made two to put the Pilots up by five in the first few minutes of the game. Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) added two good free throws for the Saints, but LSUS went on a run and added six points before the Saints were able to score again. Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) sank two points for the Saints, but S. Banks answered back with two for the Pilots. OLLU's Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) added two points for the Saints and LSUS' Leah Silva sank a three to bring the score to 11-20 in favor of the Pilots while ending the first quarter.
Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) put the Saints on the board early in the second quarter and LSUS answered back with a three. A foul from LSUS sent Okpe to the line to sink both of her free throw attempts. F. Banks put up two points to answer back to the Saints' offensive efforts. Two points from Alexis Casillas (FR/Santa Ana, Calif.), one point from Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) and another two points from Lena Wilson brought Saints to within eight of LSUS. Four points from King and one point from Okpe put the Saints back in the game, but they still trailed the Pilots by six points.
LSUS' Williams started the third quarter's scoring by sinking two points. The Saints answered back with Wilson adding two points. Williams and S. Banks added two apiece for the Pilots. Wilson made one of two free throws and Silva sank both of her free throws for the Pilots. An offensive surge from Saldana added five points for the Saints to put the team up by four. Williams added a free throw for LSUS, but Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) sank two to bring the lead to five. Dezeree White (FR/Houston, Texas) sank one of two free throws to bring the score to 60-55 in favor of the Saints heading into the fourth quarter.
Saldana added two points at the start of the fourth quarter and S. Banks answered back with two points and a made free throw for the Pilots. LSUS added two points and Okpe put up two points to bring the Saints lead to four. A three pointer from Tristen Lasker put the Pilots up by one point, but that lead changed rather quickly with a steal from White and a two-point basket made by Flores. Silva added two points and a made free throw to tie the game with only a couple of minutes left in the game. Two free throws made by Wilson put the Saints on top of the Pilots by one point, but LSUS answered back with S. Banks sinking two points. A foul from the Saints resulted in Williams heading to the line for LSUS. Williams sank both free throws to put the Pilots ahead of the Saints and end the game.
Wilson led the offense for the Saints with 20 points followed by Flores with 14 points, Saldana with 13 and Okpe with 11. Leading the way for LSUS' offense was Williams with 21 points followed by S. Banks with 18, Silva with 14, F. Banks with 13 and Shaniqua Tobias with 10. Rebounding efforts were led by Williams with 16 followed by S. Banks and F. Banks each with 10.
Inside the box
The Saints combined for 25-of-61 from the field for 41 percent, 4-of-17 from beyond the arc for 23.5 percent and 22-of-26 from the charity stripe for 84.6 percent. LSUS was 28-of-65 shooting for 43.1 percent, 5-of-17 from the three-point line for 29.4 percent and 18-of-20 free throws for 90 percent. OLLU tallied 28 rebounds compared to LSUS' 46. Additionally, the Saints forced 22 turnovers and only committed 14.
OLLU will play host to the University of the Southwest when they come to San Antonio on Feb. 16. The Saints are set to play the Mustangs at 2 p.m. in Mabee Gymnasium.
