FORT WORTH, TEXAS (March 17, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team added two nonconference games to its schedule for Sunday, March 17 at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas. The Saints faced McPherson College (MC) in game one and Langston University (LU) in game two. OLLU fell to MC 1-2 and defeated LU 13-3 in five innings.
Head Coach Kristine Samaniego commented," Our first game against McPherson was a nail biter. We put up one run in the first inning and kept the lead until the sixth inning. Ciera Martinez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) was pitching lights out. In the sixth inning, McPherson put up a timely hit that scored a run with a close play at the plate. We followed up with a two out error that allowed them to score another run that put them ahead late in the game. It was a tough loss, but there were a few lessons learned that will help us grow as a team in the long run. We turned the day around with a run rule vs. Langston. It was a great all around team effort that sent us back home on a positive note, which was going 4-for-5 on the weekend."
After the loss to McPherson College, the Saints are now 2-1 all-time against the Bulldogs. The Saints are now 31-6 against LU after the run-rule victory.
Game one overview
Ciera Martinez got the start for the Saints in the circle. She pitched six innings for the Saints and only allowed three hits. Additionally, she allowed two runs and struck out nine.
OLLU started off their game with a run in the second inning. Heavy hitter Madison Nunn (FR/Cibolo, Texas) singled to center to get the bats going for the Saints. Kennah Kennedy (SO/Frost, Texas) popped out to third for the first out of the game and Madeline Wolken (SO/Houston, Texas) struck out swinging for out number two. The Saints' offensive threat Joanna Gonzalez (FR/San Benito, Texas) stepped into the box and blasted a triple to left that scored Nunn. Gabrielle Chacon (FR/Pearland, Texas) ended the inning with a pop out to third.
The Saints and Bulldogs were unable to muster up any runs throughout the entire game until the sixth inning. MC came up to bat in the sixth inning and a defensive miscue cost the Saints the game. Chelsea Conrad reached first on a missed catch from Wolken. MC's Jessica Jones hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and was put out for the first out of the inning. Kylecia Taylor popped out to first for the second out for the Bulldogs. MC's Jenna Christensen singled to right and Conrad scored on the batted ball. Payten Davies came in to pinch run for the Bulldogs and advanced to second on a stolen base. A single from Wilson that was hit to left field resulted in Davies scoring a run for the Bulldogs. Maile Deutsch struck out swinging to end the game. OLLU fell to MC 1-2 in seven innings. The Saints fall to 9-6 overall and the Bulldogs move to 10-8 overall on the season.
