SAN ANTONIO (March 27, 2019) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball travelled a few miles for the annual matchup against NCAA D2 St. Mary's University Tuesday night. The Saints got behind at the start of the game and never recovered to lose 8-2. They move to 18-16 overall, while the Rattlers improve to 20-10.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "St. Mary's is obviously a good ball club, but that is no excuse on our end. I didn't feel we were mentally there and that's been our hurdle all year. We are at the point in our season where we need our leaders to step uo and our guys need to step up.
"We are approaching a big stretch in our conference season so it's important that we focus each time out and play our game.
"Also, I want to congratulate Coach Migle (St. Mary's coach) on his 1200th win - it's impressive and congrats to him and the program he has built."
This is the ninth matchup between the two Catholic Westside universities, and the Rattlers hold the overall 7-2 record.
With Alex Martinez starting on the mound for the Saints, Ryan McGowen walked to first, followed by Andrew Perez, who singled to right. They both advanced on the throw, and Johnny Hernandez took his turn at bat, which resulted in a two RBI triple. The Rattlers took the 2-0 lead.
Daniel Anciso (SR/Harlingen, Texas) threatened in the bottom of the first with a monster hit up through right, but subsequent batters could not do much.
The game stayed scoreless through the fourth inning. Joey Baker (JR/Cuero, Texas) replaced Martinez on the mound. Jake Marez singled and Mario Vela came home to give the Rattlers the 3-0 lead.
The Saints were finally able to add a run in the fifth inning. Jacob Mitchell (SO/Harker Heights, Texas ) hit a triple to left center, and he was brought in on a sac-fly RBI from Robert Lopez (JR/San Antonio, Texas). The Rattlers still led 3-1.
Ty Cook (SO/Highlands, Texas) came in to pitch in the fifth inning. Johnny Hernandez hit a single and Perez and McGowen scored. The Rattlers increased their lead to 5-1.
The Rattlers added two more runs in the sixth inning. Ryan Ramsey (SR/Grapevine, Texas) came in to pitch. Steve Wynn and Ragan Forrest both came home to give their team the 7-1 lead.
In the eighth inning, Javier Camacho reached on a fielder's choice, while Perez was thrown out and Derek Mueller scored. The Rattlers now led 8-1.
The Saints closed out the game with a run in the ninth. Jose Diaz (JR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop, and he later scored to end the game losing 8-2.
Suffering the loss for the Saints was Alec Martinez (SO/Corpus Christi, Texas), who went three innings allowing three hits and two runs.
The Saints will travel to Texarkana next for a three-game series against Texas A&M University - Texarkana March 28-29.
