BULLARD, TEXAS (April 19-20, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) track and field teams both finished as runner's up in the Red River Athletic Conference Championship Meet. Winning the meet for both men and women was the University of the Southwest (USW). USW registered 248 women's team points to 224 for OLLU. The USW men marked 176 points to OLLU's 163. OLLU placed second with Texas College.
Head Coach Stephen Sherman commented, "That was a heck of a meet. Every event and athlete mattered and I felt like everyone on our roster did everything within their ability to pull it our way but we came up just short on both sides. It certainly was a result that we would have liked to be different but it is nothing to hang our heads about. Hats off to a solid Southwest group."
Regarding the women, Sherman said, "I feel like we more or less won the events we needed to win, I mean we won seven out of 20 events, but Southwest did a great job of winning where they could and then nickel and diming us with their depth. That should not overshadow phenomenal effort from our women, though. To score over 200 points and not win is mind boggling."
"With the men it was a bit different in that it was more or less a three team meet," Sheman explained. "Texas College controlled the sprints, Southwest more or less controlled the field, and we controlled the distance events. I do feel like Clayton Townsend, Thomas Bailey, Chandler Sennette and Adrian Fernandez in particular are setting us on the right path to becoming more well rounded with our men's team, which needs to happen for us to ultimately pull the win off with them in the future. Just like with the women there is no shame in our result. There were many Herculean efforts."
