STERLINGTON, LA. (May 3, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team set a school record of most wins in a season after defeating Texas College in the first round of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Baseball Championship Tournament this afternoon. The Saints withstood an 8-7 lead that followed with a rain delay to return to the field and overpower the Steers 11-10 to move on to the second round of conference playoffs. The Saints move to 30-22, while the Steers drop to 25-31.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney said, "It was a back and forth game today, with a rain delay, and we had to respond – and our guys did a great job of that today. We stuck with it with hits when needed and did enough on the mound. I am proud of our guys, and now we have to get ready for tomorrow."
The Saints started on offense against the Steers, and TJ Kassner (SR/Corpus Christi, Texas) reached base on a full count off an error from Hunter Babineaux. Jose Diaz (JR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) came up to bat a hit a two-run dinger to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.
The game stayed at 2-0 through the third inning when the Steers added two runs to tie the score. They added five more runs in the fourth inning to take the 7-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Matthew Klar (FR/San Antonio, Texas) doubled to left to start the inning. Jacob Mitchell (SO/Harker Heights, Texas ) walked to first, and Klar soon after that scored on a wild throw from Michael Traylor. The Saints still trailed 7-3.
Mitchell got the Saints closer to taking over the lead in the seventh inning. Ryan Chapa (SO/Corpus Christi, Texas) first reached on a single, and then Mitchell hit a two-run homer. Diaz reached on a hit to centerfield, and after Daniel Anciso (SR/Harlingen, Texas) got on base, Alec Martinez (SO/Corpus Christi, Texas) doubled down the left field line to send both Diaz and Anciso home. A hit from Matt Mihalov (JR/Conroe, Texas) scored Martinez, and the Saints took the 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Steers scored a run, and the game was tied at 8-8.
IN the eighth inning, the Steers scored two runs to take the 10-8 lead.
In the top of the ninth, the Saints were able to regain the lead. Anciso began the rally with a double to left. A hit from Mihalov sent Anciso home. A hit from Ty Cook (SO/Highlands, Texas) scored Martinez and Mihalov, and the Saints now led 11-10. After the Steers were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, the Saints sealed the 11-10 win.
Jose Diaz, Daniel Anciso, and Matt Mihalov each had three hits each on five at-bats. Diaz, Anciso, and Alec Martinez had two runs each, and Mitchell, Diaz, Martinez, Mihalov and Ty Cook had two RBIs each.
Joey Baker (JR/Cuero, Texas) earned the win after pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. Logan Garza (SO/Round Rock, Texas) started on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings. He struck out six. Ryan Ramsey (SR/Grapevine, Texas) pitched three innings. Roderick Voisin suffered the loss after pitching 2.2 innings.
The Saints scheduled game against LSU-Alexandria will be rescheduled due to rain in the area.
