SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 30, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's cross-country team ran its first race of 2019 at the UIW Opener held at the Classics Elite Soccer Complex. Teams in the race were NCAA D1 schools University of the Incarnate Word, Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University and University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley, as well as NCAA D3 schools Trinity University and Texas Lutheran University. OLLU was the only NAIA school participating.
Head Coach Stephen Sherman said, "It was good to get most of our group out tonight for the real thing. We've been going at it for a few weeks now, and I feel like everyone was ready to go race. Now we have a reference point for where we are vs. where we want to be."
Leading the way for the Saints was Sabrina Garcia, who ran the 4K in 17:29.4. She was followed by Andrea Gandara at 17:56.0, Lindsey Broussard at 17:58.1, Robbie Sue Espericueta at 18:03.9, Alyssa Vidales at 18:23.3, Nadia Sifuentes at 18:24.5, Peyton Lammons at 19:34.2 and Gloria Cervantes at21:00.5.
Sherman commented, "The women's grouping through the finish was nice, but the placing of each individual simply was not high enough for a good result. I am wondering if maybe the women were too focused on running as a group and consequently were way too conservative through the race. I am really not sure. That is something we will need to talk about as a group. What I do know for sure is that our women our much better than this showing, but they'll need to prove it over the next few meets."
The next race for the Saints is their Saints Collegiate Cross-Country Invitational on Sept. 21, beginning at 8 a.m. It will take place at the Wincrest Golf Club in Windcrest, Texas.
