WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS (Nov. 1, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) 98-71 on Friday. The Saints drop to 0-2 on the season and the Lions open their season with a win.
Head Coach Chris Dial said, "We played a really tough SAGU team today. They were running on all cylinders and we weren't. We played short-handed due to injuries and the guys we played gave a good effort. We had shots not fall that we expect to fall going forward. The road trip overall has been a good experience for us and we will continue to learn and get better."
This is the 10th matchup against SAGU and the Saints lead the series 5-4.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to start the game. The Saints battled back after Jared Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) hit back-to-back three pointers to tie the game. Embry finished with 17 points and shot 50 percent from the field. SAGU took control of the first half and led at halftime at 49-34 lead. The Saints committed 11 turnovers in the first half and shot 37.9 percent from the field.
In the second half, the Saints drew within 11 points of the Lions lead with help from Victor Roper (FR/San Antonio, Texas), who finished with a team-leading 20 points. SAGU scored eight points within the last minute and a half to win by 27. Embry tallied five rebounds for the Saints in the second half and had three assists along with Tyler Giron (SO/Houston, Texas).
Roper led the Saints in scoring with 20 points, hitting 7-of-9 from the field and making 6-of-9 free throws. Embry scored 17 points, followed by Michael Saladin (SR/Beaumont, Texas) with 16. Embry led the Saints with five rebounds, followed by Finn Wilczek (SO/Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany) and Estefan Trevino (SO/San Antonio, Texas) with four each. Embry and Giron led the team with three assists each.
SAGU was led by Joshua Kashila with 20 points and Nykolas Mason with 18. Terrance Hubby led the team with nine rebounds. Mason contributed a team high six assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 23-of-60 shooting for 38.3 percent, 8-of-21 from three-point range for 38.1 percent and 17-of-28 from the free throw line for 60.7 percent. SAGU shot 39-of-67 for 58.2 percent, 9-of-25 three pointers for 36 percent and 11-of-12 from the free throw line for 91.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 28 rebounds while the Lions collected 44 rebounds. OLLU forced 22 turnovers and committed 21.
The Saints travel to Fort Worth, Texas, at Texas Wesleyan University to face Oklahoma City University on Nov. 8 at 5 p.m.
