SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 9, 2019) - After winning four Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) consecutive championships and a share of another (2015-2018), some might think the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's volleyball team might be a favorite to win again this year. However, plagued with injuries all season long, the team fell to third place in the regular season, but after last night's hard-fought win against No. 2 seed Wiley College, no one can count the Saints out.
The women will face the regular-season champions Huston-Tillotson University, who posted an 11-1 conference record, at 1 p.m. for the tournament title.
The Rams' sole loss was to the Saints in September. The Saints dominated that match 3-1, winning 25-22, 25-17, 11-25 and 25-22. The Saints were fully healthy that match, but have since suffered some key losses, while the Rams have gone on a tear, posting an overall 25-5 record. In their match in October, the Saints lost 1-3, 15-25, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25.
The Saints crushed Texas College 3-0 (25-6, 25-11, 25-5) in the first round of the playoffs to meet up with Wiley in the semifinals round. The probability for a win against the Lady Wildcats was low after they defeated the Saints in both matches this season, winning 3-0 in September and 3-1 in October. In the semifinals match, the Saints shocked the Lady Wildcats with a 25-23, 27-25 and 29-27 win, ending their season with an overall 17-11 record.
This afternoon, the Saints will be up against Front-Row Player of the Year Tiara Thompson and Defensive Specialist of the Year Mir Tillman, while the Saints will be led by Newcomer of the Year Kalani Ketchens (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and the most All-Conference First Team winners, Sadie Ballesteros (FR/San Antonio, Texas), Ketchens, Alyssa Marquez (SO/Albuquerque, N.M.), Anyssa Rivera (SR/El Paso, Texas) and Anissa Tamez (JR/San Antonio, Texas).
The overall record against the Rams is 24-2. Their only other loss against Huston-Tillotson was last season, 0-3.
