SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 14, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team took down Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) 81-69 during their first home game of the season. The Saints improve to 2-3 this season, and the Knights remain winless at 0-6.
This is the second matchup against the Knights, and SUNO won the only game 93-85 last season.
The Knights started strong by leading the Saints 16-4 and forcing an OLLU timeout. Following the timeout, the Saints reached their first lead of the game 14 minutes into the first half. The Saints erased a 39-39 tie to lead by five entering halftime. OLLU forced seven turnovers in the first half and shot 47.2 percent from the field. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Saints maintained a consistent lead for the majority of the second half. SUNO came back from being down 12 points to limit the Saints to a two-point lead in a matter of two minutes. With five minutes remaining, the Saints found their momentum and outscored the Knights 10-0 to win 81-69. The Saints forced the Knights into 15 turnovers. Monzon finished with a double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Carlson Goode (JR/Blythewood, S.C.) and Cameron Fields (JR/Kerrville, Texas) finished with four assists each.
Monzon led the Saints in scoring with 26 points, hitting 9-of-16 from the field and sinking 7-of-8 free throws. Jared Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) scored 20 points, followed by Fields with 10. Monzon led the Saints with 16 rebounds, followed by Embry with six. Goode and Fields led the team with four assists each.
SUNO was led by Joshua Chris Mark with 17 points and Terran Collins-Lundy with 11. Raymone Lampkin led the team with 10 rebounds. Mark contributed a team-high four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 27-of-63 shooting for 42.9 percent, 8-of-23 from three-point range for 34.8 percent and 19-of-22 from the free throw line for 86.4 percent. The Knights shot 27-of-58 for 46.6 percent, 4-of-15 three pointers for 26.7 percent and 11-of-17 from the free throw line for 64.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 37 rebounds while the Knights collected 34 rebounds. OLLU forced 15 turnovers and committed nine.
