SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. (Nov. 22, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team fell to Westmont College (WC) 78-71 on Friday as part of the Westmont Classic. Westmont, the No. 8-ranked team in the NAIA, improves to 3-1 and the No. 6-ranked Saints drop to 2-2.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens said, "Westmont played a great game and their players hustle was evident throughout the game. We needed to do better in communicating and covering the three point line on defense. Offensively we were not aggressive enough in transition. Our team is growing and learning through a tough preseason schedule, but I believe the challenges we face now will only make us better as the season continues."
This is the first matchup between the two programs.
The Saints led after the first quarter by one point. Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) led the Saints with seven points and Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) added five points. The second quarter was neck and neck with Westmont leading by two at the half. The Warriors led by seven midway through the quarter, but the Saints battled back with help from four different players hitting field goals. Westmont held the Saints scoreless from the three-point line at halftime and tallied seven assists.
The Warriors came out hot to start the third quarter by taking an 11-point lead after they hit three three-pointers in a row while holding the Saints scoreless during that span. Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) hit two three-pointers to cut Westmont's lead to two. The Warriors led by seven heading into the final frame. Westmont never looked back and led by seven or more points the entire fourth quarter. Both teams tallied double-digit rebounds during the fourth quarter.
Saldana led the Saints in scoring with 21 points. White scored 12 points, followed by Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) with 10. Mgbeike led the Saints with nine rebounds, followed by White with eight. Angeline Sanchez (FR/Cibolo, Texas) led the team with five assists.
Westmont was led by Maud Ranger with 22 points. She also led the team with 13 rebounds. Stefanie Berberabe tallied a team high 11 assists.
