SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 29, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team took down Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) 94-65 in the Saints Halo Classic. The Saints improve to 3-3 on the season and the Aggies fall to 3-4. In the first game of the Halo Classic, Oklahoma City University defeated Keiser University 89-52. On Saturday, the Saints will face the Stars, while Keiser will play the Aggies.
This is the first meeting between the two programs.
The Saints started strong and led 9-2 early after a three-point shot and a field goal from Keviona Barber (JR/Chicago, Ill.). Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) finished the first quarter with 10 points which was only five shy of the Aggies point total. The Saints led 36-15 at the end of the first quarter marking their most points in the first quarter this season. The second quarter was dominated by the Saints again and they limited the Aggies to nine points. Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) scored her 1,000th point as a Saint after making a free throw late in the second quarter. She is the eighth female to join the Saints 1,000-Point Club and the 14th overall. Last season, Kasey Saldana earned her spot in the club.
The Saints shot 47.4 percent from the field during the second half and finished with 94 points. OLLU forced 27 turnovers throughout the game and shot over 50 percent from the three-point line.
Saldana led the Saints in scoring with 15 points, hitting 3-of-6 from the three-point line and making all four free throws. Barber scored 14 points, followed by Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) and Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) with 11. White led the Saints with seven rebounds, followed by Natalia Trevino (FR/Laredo, Texas), Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) and Tiffany Lopez (FR/San Antonio, Texas) with five. Zerina Shatri (JR/Prishtine, Kosovo) and White led the Saints with three assists each.
OPSU was led by Shay Audrain with 11 points. Cassia McCaskill led the team with five rebounds. Kaylee Morgan contributed a team-high four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 32-of-67 shooting for 47.8 percent, 10-of-19 from three-point range for 52.6 percent and 20-of-26 from the free-throw line for 76.9 percent. OPSU shot 24-of-51 for 47.1 percent, 9-of-25 three pointers for 36 percent and 8-of-16 from the free-throw line for 50 percent.
The Saints grabbed 39 rebounds while the Aggies collected 32. OLLU forced 27 turnovers and committed 15.
The Saints wrap up the Halo Classic with a game against No. 3-ranked Oklahoma City University at 2 p.m. on Nov. 30.
