HOBBS, N.M. (Dec. 9, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team scored in triple-digits for the second straight game and beat University of the Southwest (USW) 117-63 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in conference. The Mustangs fall to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the win, "I liked how our bench came in and continued to play with intensity and tempo. They shared the ball and played tough on defense. Our defense was aggressive, and we communicated and finished plays. That is the style we want to have in all games, and I am happy with how our whole team worked hard to improve."
This is the 21st meeting between the teams and the Saints lead the series 19-1. OLLU hasn't lost to Southwest since 2010.
Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) led the Saints in scoring with 14 points, hitting 6-of-16 from the field and recording three steals. Zerina Shatri (JR/Prishtine, Kosovo) and Suzuna Shoji (JR/Ibaraki, Japan) followed with 12 points each. Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) and Alexis White (SO/Houston, Texas) led the Saints with eight rebounds each. Angeline Sanchez (FR/Cibolo, Texas) recorded a team-high six assists.
Southwest was led by Harlei Haceesa with 14 points. Isabel Rodriguez led the team with 14 rebounds. Rodriguez and Martinique Larvingo contributed a team-high three assists each.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 48-of-101 shooting for 47.5 percent, 9-of-25 from three-point range for 36 percent and 12-of-19 from the free-throw line for 63.2 percent. Southwest shot 24-of-74 for 32.4 percent, 6-of-26 three pointers for 23.1 percent and 9-of-18 from the free-throw line for 50 percent.
The Saints grabbed 58 rebounds while the Mustangs collected 50. OLLU forced 38 turnovers and committed 16.
The Saints play their first Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) home game against Texas College on Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
