SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 13, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team could not maintain a 14-point lead in the first half despite a hard-fought effort against Texas College (TC) on Thursday night. The 77-86 loss moves the Saints to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference while TC improves to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in conference. The Steers received votes in the most recent NAIA D1 coaches' poll.
This is the 22nd matchup against Texas College. The Saints are 16-5 in the series and have lost the two previous games.
The Saints grabbed the lead three minutes into the game and maintained it for the duration of the first half. Aggressive offense from the Saints forced the Steers into foul trouble, and OLLU led by five at halftime. The Saints shot 51.7 percent from the field, and Michael Saladin (SR/Beaumont, Texas) tallied 10 points. Jared Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) grabbed six rebounds. The Saints defense limited the Steers field-goal percentage to 37.1.
There were six ties throughout the second half, including a 72-72 tie at the 4:21 mark. Following that tie, the Steers pulled away by going on a seven-point run and eventually winning 86-77. Despite the loss, the Saints shot better from the field than the Steers but committed 25 turnovers. The Saints will look for its first win on Saturday against Jarvis Christian College.
Saladin led the Saints with a season-high 27 points. Embry tallied 10 points and Estefan Trevino (SO/San Antonio, Texas) followed with nine. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) led the Saints with nine rebounds, followed by Embry with eight. Monzon led the team with three assists.
Demetrious Fitzpatrick led the Steers with 31 points. Fitzpatrick also led the team with seven rebounds. Christian Bryant, Travion Wright and Dominique Phelgm led the team with one assist each.

OLLU combined for 25-of-52 shooting for 48.1 percent, 6-of-16 from three-point range for 37.5 percent and 21-of-30 from the free-throw line for 70 percent. Texas College shot 26-of-63 for 41.3 percent, 9-of-24 three-pointers for 37.5 percent and 25-of-33 from the free-throw line for 75.8 percent.
The Saints grabbed 42 rebounds while the Steers collected 31. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed 25.
The Saints continue conference play at home against Jarvis Christian College on Dec. 14 at 4 p.m.
