SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 14, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost to Jarvis Christian College (JCC) 84-76 for its fifth straight loss. The Saints drop to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Jarvis won its first game of the season and is 1-9 overall and 1-3 in conference.
This is the 22nd matchup against the Bulldogs. The Saints are 17-4 in the series and lost the previous game 92-86 last season.
The Saints struggled to start the game and found themselves down by 12 halfway through the first half. OLLU shot 6-of-28 from the field and only 1-of-10 from the three-point line. Jarvis grabbed 22 defensive rebounds and led by 14 at the half. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) led the Saints with six points. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, with OLLU hitting 60 percent of their shots and Jarvis sinking 45.5 percent.
The Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead up until 23 seconds remaining in the game. Jared Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) finished with a team-leading 15 points and Monzon grabbed eight rebounds. The Saints struggled from the field shooting 38.7 percent, while the Bulldogs hit 50 percent. Jarvis won by eight points and earned their first conference victory.
Embry led the Saints with 15 points, followed by Christian Fields (JR/Kerrville, Texas) with 12 and Monzon with 11. Monzon led the Saints with eight rebounds, followed by Embry with six. Fields led the team with three assists.
McShane Wyatt led the Bulldogs with 27 points. Wyatt also led the team with nine rebounds. Phillip Timothy Thompson led the team with three assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 24-of-62 shooting for 38.7 percent, 9-of-25 from three-point range for 36 percent and 19-of-28 from the free-throw line for 67.9 percent. Jarvis shot 30-of-60 for 50 percent, 11-of-21 three pointers for 52.4 percent and 13-of-22 from the free-throw line for 59.1 percent.
The Saints grabbed 42 rebounds while the Bulldogs collected 35. OLLU forced 15 turnovers and committed 20.
The Saints face Texas Wesleyan University at home on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. Texas Wesleyan defeated the Saints 80-68 on Nov. 9.
