PHOENIX (Dec. 18, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated the NAIA's No. 23-ranked Carroll College (CC) 72-69 to open play in the Frontier Classic. No. 16-ranked OLLU improves to 8-4 overall and remains at 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Carroll drops to 7-5 overall. The Saints have won five straight games and tonight marks their first win against a ranked team this season.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the win, "I was proud of how the team stayed calm and didn't get rattled at half. I loved that we created 28 turnovers while only committing 12, it shows growth and maturity that will hopefully continue to improve as the season goes on. Carroll is well coached and disciplined and it was a really fun game to be a part of."
This is the second matchup against Carroll and the Saints lost 76-55 last season.
The Saints dominated the first quarter by forcing 10 turnovers and shooting 47.1 percent from the field. Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) tallied 13 points and the team hit all eight free throws. Carroll entered the second quarter down 27-15 and tied the game with three minutes remaining in the first half. The Saints were limited to seven points in the second quarter and headed to the locker room tied 34-34 at halftime.
OLLU responded in the third quarter after a disappointing end to the first half. The Saints held Carroll scoreless for a little under five minutes during the middle of the quarter. Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) scored eight points to help the Saints lead by four heading into the final frame.
Carroll trailed for most of the fourth quarter but battled back to lead by one point with 53 seconds left. Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) drew a foul and hit both free throws. The Saints led by one and solid defense forced a missed three-pointer from Carroll. Carroll was forced to foul and Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) sunk both of her free throws to increase the Saints lead to three. Christine Denny missed a game-tying three-pointer as time ran out and the Saints won 72-69.
Saldana led the Saints in scoring with 17 points. White scored 16 points, followed by Keviona Barber (JR/Chicago, Ill.) and Mgbeike with 10 apiece. Alexis White (SO/Houston, Texas) led the team with five rebounds, followed by White and Mgbeike with four each. Barber finished with a team-high three assists.
CC was led by Danielle Wagner with 28 points. Wagner also led the team with eight rebounds. Jaidyn Lyman led Carroll with four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 20-of-52 shooting for 38.5 percent, 5-of-13 from three-point range for 38.5 percent and 27-of-34 from the free-throw line for 79.4 percent. Carroll shot 21-of-56 for 37.5 percent, 10-of-29 three pointers for 34.5 percent and 17-of-22 from the free-throw line for 77.3 percent.
The Saints grabbed 27 rebounds while Carroll collected 38. OLLU forced 28 turnovers and committed 12.
The Saints continue play in the Frontier Classic against Rocky Mountain College on Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. Central Standard Time. Rocky Mountain College is ranked No. 25 in the NAIA.
