PHOENIX (Dec. 19, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team handled the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Rocky Mountain College (RMC) 96-59 in the Frontier Classic. No. 16-ranked OLLU moves to 9-4 overall and remains at 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Rocky Mountain drops to 6-3 overall. With the victory, the Saints extend the winning streak to six games and pick up their second win against a ranked team this season.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens said, "I was really proud of the effort, energy and tempo that we came out with. I think our players are very talented, and today we showed it throughout the game and in the stat sheets. This win continues to help us see the growth and improvement of our team."
This is the second matchup against Rocky Mountain. The Battlin' Bears won the only meeting 76-55 last season.
The Saints dominated the pace of play throughout the entire game and never trailed. In the first quarter, Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) tallied nine points, and the Saints led by 13. OLLU increased the lead to 19 points heading into halftime after scoring more than 20 points in each of the first two quarters.
The third quarter was evenly played with both teams scoring 18 points. The Saints maintained their 19-point lead heading into the final frame. White continued her impressive play and finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds to earn a double-double. The Saints won by 37 point,s and the bench scored 44 points.
Dezeree White led the Saints in scoring with 17 points. Alexis White (SO/Houston, Texas), Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas), Emiko Hemphill (JR/San Antonio, Texas) and Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) followed with 12 points each. Dezeree White led the team with 12 rebounds along with her 17 points, giving her a double-double. She also led the Saints with six assists.
Rocky Mountain was led by Mackenzie Dethman with 18 points. Dethman and Markaela Francis led the team with nine rebounds each. Kloie Thatcher led the Battlin' Bears with five assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 39-of-83 shooting for 47 percent, 4-of-19 from three-point range for 21.1 percent and 14-of-20 from the free-throw line for 70 percent. Rocky Mountain shot 23-of-71 for 32.4 percent, 4-of-28 three-pointers for 14.3 percent and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line for 64.3 percent.
The Saints grabbed 49 rebounds while the Battlin' Bears collected 50. OLLU forced 26 turnovers and committed 13.
The Saints conclude the Frontier Classic with a game against Montana Tech on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time.
