SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 19, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) 102-82. The Saints drop to 4-10 overall and remain at 0-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Lions improve to 8-2 overall.
This is the 11th meeting between the Saints and Lions. OLLU is 6-4 against SAGU but have lost three straight games in the series.
The first 14 minutes of the game were evenly played with six lead changes. The Lions pulled ahead by 12 points late in the first half and led at halftime by nine. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) had an impressive 18 points at the half and Darin Minniefield (JR/Houston, Texas) tallied four assists. The Saints shot 50 percent from the field but turned the ball over 11 times.
SAGU started the second half strong and led by double-digits throughout the rest of the game. The Lions shot 55.4 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from the three-point line. Victor Roper (FR/San Antonio, Texas) had a strong second half and finished with 18 points. The Lions won by 20 points and beat the Saints in their previous matchup in November 98-71.
Monzon led the Saints with 20 points, followed by Roper with 18 and Minniefield with 11. Monzon tallied a team-high six rebounds. Minniefield led the team with five assists.
Joshua Kashila led the Lions with 27 points. Kashila also led the team with 13 rebounds to earn a double-double. Kentton Williams and Darian Davis tallied a team-high four assists each.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 26-of-59 shooting for 44.1 percent, 7-of-25 from three-point range for 28 percent and 23-of-25 from the free-throw line for 92 percent. SAGU shot 36-of-65 for 55.4 percent, 12-of-26 three pointers for 46.2 percent and 18-of-23 from the free-throw line for 78.3 percent.
The Saints grabbed 30 rebounds while the Lions collected 37. OLLU forced 18 turnovers and committed 20.
The Saints play on the road against UTSA in an exhibition game on Dec. 28 at 3 p.m.
