PHOENIX (Dec. 20, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Montana Tech University (MTU) 87-72 to finish undefeated in the Frontier Classic. No. 16-ranked OLLU improves to 10-4 overall and remains at 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Montana Tech, who received votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, falls to 11-3 overall.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the victory, "I think Lena [Wilson] showed a lot of maturity and fight and came through when the team needed her. I am impressed with how this team continues to fight and compete against three nationally recognized teams in three days. I loved how our team played defense and created turnovers. I believe that Montana Tech is a very talented team and expect to see them climb in the ratings."
This is the second matchup against Montana Tech. OLLU won the first meeting 93-89 in 2016.
The Saints led the entire first quarter backed by nine points from Zerina Shatri (JR/Prishtine, Kosovo). The Diggers struck back and took their first lead early in the second quarter. OLLU led by one-point heading into halftime, and Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) tallied 10 points.
OLLU started to pull away in the third quarter. Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) added nine points and the Saints led by 11 heading into the final frame. Wilson finished with 29 points, her second highest point total in a game in her career. The Saints led by double-digits throughout the fourth quarter and won by 15 points.
Wilson led the Saints in scoring with 29 points. Saldana followed with 27. Shatri led the team with nine rebounds. Saldana led the Saints with seven assists.
Montana Tech was led by with Mesa Williams with 21 points. Tavia Rooney led the team with 15 rebounds. Williams led the Diggers with six assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 27-of-73 shooting for 37 percent, 9-of-24 from three-point range for 37.5 percent and 24-of-27 from the free-throw line for 88.9 percent. Montana Tech shot 26-of-59 for 44.1 percent, 7-of-20 three pointers for 35 percent and 13-of-14 from the free-throw line for 92.9 percent.
The Saints grabbed 34 rebounds while the Diggers collected 46. OLLU forced 34 turnovers and committed 15.
The Saints head to Nacogdoches, Texas, to face Stephen F. Austin State in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. on Dec. 29.
