NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 3, 2020) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team rolled past Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) 105-74 for its eighth straight win. No. 16-ranked OLLU improves to 11-4 overall and remains at 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). SUNO drops to 2-7 overall.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the win, "SUNO is a very tough team, and I respect the work that their coach is doing with the team. I am proud of how the team kept their composure and continued to work hard throughout the whole game. We had six players in double-digits and collected 60 rebounds. We still have room to improve and must put our focus on our game tomorrow against a talented Dillard team."
This is the third matchup against SUNO. The Saints lead the series 2-0 and haven't faced the Knights since 2011.
The Saints started strong by racing to a 9-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game. OLLU allowed only 11 points in the first quarter and led by 12. The pressure continued in the second quarter, and the Saints led by as many as 18 points. Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) tallied 18 points at halftime, and the team hit all 11 free throws.
OLLU led by 20 or more points for the majority of the third quarter and all throughout the fourth quarter. The Knights shot 29 percent from the field and only 57.7 percent from the free-throw line. Wilson finished with 21 points and Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) tallied double-digit rebounds with 11. The Saints were attentive on defense and recorded 14 steals.
Wilson led the Saints in scoring with 21 points. Saldana followed with 14. Mgbeike picked up a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds and added 12 points. Angeline Sanchez (FR/Cibolo, Texas) led the Saints with six assists.
SUNO was led by with Sha'Quanta Pettis with 24 points. Victoria Udechi led the team with 23 rebounds. Whitney Waters led the Knights with five assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 38-of-92 shooting for 41.3 percent, 10-of-29 from three-point range for 34.5 percent and 19-of-22 from the free-throw line for 86.4 percent. SUNO shot 27-of-93 for 93 percent, 5-of-21 three pointers for 23.8 percent and 15-of-26 from the free-throw line for 57.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 60 rebounds while the Knights collected 65. OLLU forced 21 turnovers and committed 12.
The Saints stay in New Orleans to face Dillard on Jan. 4 at 4 p.m.
