NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 4, 2020) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team took down Dillard (DU) 86-59 to extend its winning streak to nine games. No. 16-ranked OLLU climbs to 12-4 overall and remains at 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Dillard falls to 6-9 overall.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens said, "I am proud of how Emiko [Hemphill] stepped up tonight. She played aggressive and ran the floor like we see every day in practice. Dillard is extremely fast and long, and we played great defense for the full 40 minutes. I love that we had five players in double-digits. The ball movement and shot selection has gotten better throughout the season."
This is the fifth matchup against Dillard. The Saints lead the series 3-1 and defeated the Bleu Devils 94-66 last season.
The Bleu Devils only trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter after turning the ball over 10 times. Both teams struggled from the field for the majority of the first half. The Saints started to pull away late in the second quarter and went to halftime with a six-point advantage. Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) had 10 points and Emiko Hemphill (JR/San Antonio, Texas) grabbed five rebounds.
The Saints maintained a lead throughout the entire second half. Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) and White finished the third quarter with 16 points each and Hemphill increased her rebound tally to nine. OLLU led by as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter and won the game by 27. The Saints shot 42 percent from the field and forced 36 turnovers.
White led the Saints in scoring with 20 points. Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) tallied 19 points and Wilson followed with 18. Hemphill picked up a double-double with a team-high 13 rebounds and added 11 points. Saldana led the Saints with six assists.
Dillard was led by with Paige Williams with 15 points. Jaquanna Hunter led the team with eight rebounds. Jabria Pounds led the Blue Devils with four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 34-of-81 shooting for 42 percent, 6-of-26 from three-point range for 23.1 percent and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line for 75 percent. Dillard shot 20-of-57 for 35.1 percent, 8-of-18 three pointers for 44.4 percent and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for 84.6 percent.
The Saints grabbed 47 rebounds while the Bleu Devils collected 40. OLLU forced 36 turnovers and committed 20.
The Saints return home to play conference foe LSU-Shreveport on Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
