TEXARKANA, TEXAS (Jan. 16, 2020) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball trounced Texas A&M-University Texarkana (TAMUT) 118-47, marking their second largest margin of victory this season. No. 16-ranked OLLU improves to 14-5 overall and 6-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Texarkana falls to 3-15 overall and 0-6 in conference.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the win, "Hats off to the Eagles and how hard they played for the entire game. We executed plays and played consistently throughout the game. This is a talented team from top to bottom, and they represented OLLU tonight in a fun and competitive way."
This is the first matchup between the two schools since TAMUT joined the RRAC this season.
The Eagles led 3-2 in the first few minutes of the game and it would be their only lead. In the first quarter the Saints shot 58.6 percent from the field and forced 11 turnovers. OLLU held the Eagles to 11 points in the first quarter and Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) outscored the Eagles with 16 points of her own. At halftime Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) had six assists and the Saints led by 43 points. OLLU allowed only 16 points in the first half, the lowest a team has scored against the Saints this season.
The Saints poured on the points in the third quarter and led by 60 a few minutes before the fourth quarter. By the end of the game every player on the Saints had scored at least once and OLLU won by 71 points. Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) finished with 19 points and three different players grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Saldana led the Saints in scoring with 20 points. Miller tallied 19 points and Alexandra Strawhorn (JR/Kyneton, Victoria, Australia) followed with 12. Alexis White (SO/Houston, Texas), Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) and Emiko Hemphill (JR/San Antonio, Texas) led the team with eight rebounds each. White led the Saints with eight assists.
Texarkana was led by with Victoria Hill with 13 points. Naomi Tekleab, Mi'lan Francis-Miller and Haylee Washington led the team with five rebounds each. Hill led the Eagles with three assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 44-of-95 shooting for 46.3 percent, 10-of-25 from three-point range for 40 percent and 20-of-26 from the free-throw line for 76.9 percent. Texarkana shot 16-of-70 for 22.9 percent, 7-of-35 three pointers for 20 percent and 8-of-14 from the free-throw line for 57.1 percent.
The Saints grabbed 66 rebounds while the Eagles collected 43. OLLU forced 32 turnovers and committed 14.
The Saints head to Marshall, Texas, to face Wiley College at 2 p.m. on Jan. 18.
