MARSHALL, TEXAS (Jan. 18, 2020) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball held on to defeat Wiley College (WC) 96-82 on Saturday. No. 16-ranked OLLU climbs to 15-5 overall and 7-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Wiley drops to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in conference.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the victory, "Wiley is a tough team and playing in the Alumni Gym is always a challenge. The second quarter we played up tempo, got to the rim and made the extra passes when needed. I think Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) came out and was aggressive from the beginning. I'm proud of her progression throughout this year."
The Saints are 17-5 against Wiley and haven't lost to the Wildcats since 2013.
The Saints struggled early and were held to 11 points, the fewest in the first quarter this season for OLLU. Wiley shot 47.1 percent from the field and grabbed 18 rebounds. The Wildcats led by 17 points four minutes into the second quarter when the momentum changed. OLLU totaled 39 points in the second quarter and led by six heading into halftime. Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) led the team with 16 points and Zerina Shatri (JR/Prishtine, Kosovo) tallied six rebounds.
After maintaining a steady lead in the third quarter the Wildcats cut the Saints lead to one. OLLU responded by outscoring Wiley 17-3 heading into the final frame. White led the Saints with 20 points and seven rebounds. The Saints entered the fourth quarter leading by 15 and maintained a double-digit lead. OLLU forced 32 turnovers and won by 14 points. White recorded a season-high 27 points and OLLU outscored Wiley 85-57 following the first quarter.
White led the Saints in scoring with 27 points - a career high. Miller tallied 21 points and Keviona Barber (JR/Chicago, Ill.) finished with a season-high 17 points. White led the team with eight rebounds. Barber tallied a team-high seven assists.
Wiley was led by with Kayja Jackson with 21 points. Jackson finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Kyani Moore scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double as well. Brianna Tolliver led the Wildcats with six assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 35-of-82 shooting for 42.7 percent, 8-of-23 from three-point range for 34.8 percent and 18-of-22 from the free-throw line for 81.8 percent. Wiley shot 29-of-65 for 44.6 percent, 6-of-21 three pointers for 28.6 percent and 18-of-30 from the free-throw line for 60 percent.
The Saints grabbed 38 rebounds while the Wildcats collected 54. OLLU forced 32 turnovers and committed 18.
The Saints conclude their road trip in Austin, Texas to face Huston-Tillotson University on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.
