MARSHALL, TEXAS (Jan. 18, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team defeated Wiley College (WC) 73-71 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 5-13 overall and earn their first win in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) this season to move to 1-7 in conference. The Wildcats fall to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in conference.
Head Coach Chris Dial commented on the win, "We've had the tendency to be up and down this year in terms of consistent effort and energy. This road trip was no exception. I am proud of the way our guys responded and fought. This is a tough place to play and we will be back to work on Monday."
The Saints are 15-8 against Wiley but have lost three straight games to the Wildcats.
After two ties in the first half the Saints went on a 7-0 run to lead by nine at halftime. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) grabbed an impressive 12 rebounds and the Saints held the Wildcats to 21.2 percent shooting from the field. Darin Minniefield (JR/Houston, Texas) added five assists and both teams had double-digit turnovers.
The Saints led by 13 points with four minutes remaining in the game when the Wildcats gained momentum. OLLU's lead was quickly erased and the game was tied at 71 with under one-minute remaining. Michael Saladin (SR/Beaumont, Texas) drew a foul with two seconds left and hit both free throws. The Wildcats missed a three-point shot at the buzzer and the Saints held on for their first conference win of the season. The victory snaps the Saints four game losing streak.
Saladin led the Saints with 17 points, followed by Monzon with 16 and Minniefield with 10. Monzon tallied a team-high 18 rebounds to earn a double-double. Minniefield led the team with eight assists.
Taylan Grogan led the Wildcats with 22 points. Travious Grubbs led the team with nine rebounds. Grubbs and Jamir Cheek tallied a team-high three assists each.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 25-of-58 shooting for 43.1 percent, 4-of-12 from three-point range for 33.3 percent and 19-of-26 from the free-throw line for 73.1 percent. Wiley shot 23-of-67 for 34.3 percent, 3-of-14 three pointers for 21.4 percent and 22-of-35 from the free-throw line for 62.9 percent.
The Saints grabbed 47 rebounds while the Eagles collected 42. OLLU forced 17 turnovers and committed 25.
The Saints head to Austin, Texas to take on Huston-Tillotson University at 4 p.m. on Jan. 25.
