AUSTIN, TEXAS (Jan. 25, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team defeated Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) 84-80 to create their first winning streak this season. The Saints improve to 6-13 overall and 2-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Rams fall to 7-11 overall and 6-3 in conference.
The Saints are 17-3 against HTU but lost both games against the Rams last season.
The Rams led by as many as nine points in the first half, but the Saints went into halftime with a three-point lead. Estefan Trevino (SO/San Antonio, Texas) scored nine points and Darin Minniefield (JR/Houston, Texas) added seven points. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) grabbed seven rebounds and the team forced six turnovers.
The second half saw the lead go back and forth multiple times. The game was tied 77-77 with 1:20 remaining when Michael Saladin hit a key three-point shot to give the Saints the lead. Gregory Roberts responded for the Rams to cut the Saints lead to one-point. Minniefield drew a foul and hit both free-throws. The Saints made a defensive stop and ended up winning by four points, aided by two clutch free-throws from Victor Roper (FR/San Antonio, Texas) to seal the game.
Saladin led the Saints with 21 points, followed by Monzon with 17 and three different players with 11. Monzon tallied a team-high 13 rebounds to earn a double-double. Minniefield led the team with seven assists.
Davon Parmer and Jeremy Soloman led the Rams with 24 points each. James Jenkins led the team with nine rebounds. Medarius Roberts tallied a team-high nine assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 32-of-64 shooting for 50 percent, 9-of-22 from three-point range for 40.9 percent and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for 84.6 percent. HTU shot 31-of-66 for 47 percent, 9-of-28 three pointers for 32.1 percent and 9-of-23 from the free-throw line for 39.1 percent.
The Saints grabbed 39 rebounds while the Rams collected 36. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed 18.
The Saints face Paul Quinn College at home on Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
