SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 30, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team defeated Paul Quinn College (PQC) 85-81 for its third straight Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) win. The Saints improve to 7-13 overall and 3-7 in the RRAC. Paul Quinn drops to 5-19 overall and 3-7 in conference.
This is the 22nd meeting between the two teams, and the Saints lead the series 19-2.
Paul Quinn led for the majority of the first half. The Tigers shot 48.4 percent from the field and forced seven turnovers. The Saints only trailed by four points at halftime despite shooting 37 percent from the field. Estefan Trevino (SO/San Antonio, Texas) finished the first half with nine points.
The Saints trailed by six points with under three minutes left in the game. Michael Saladin (SR/Beaumont, Texas) and Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) added eight points to give the Saints a two-point lead with 52 seconds remaining. The Saints hit six straight free throws in crunch time to fend off the Tigers and win by three points. Three straight conference wins is a season high for the Saints.
Monzon led the team with 16 points, followed by Saladin with 15. Monzon led the Saints with 12 rebounds to earn a double-double. Four Saints players had a team high two assists each.
Paul Quinn was led by Kevin Baker with 16 points. Spencer McElway led the team with 15 rebounds and added 14 points for a double-double. Torron Mingo contributed a team high three assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 22-of-55 shooting for 40 percent, 6-of-20 from three-point range for 30 percent and 35-of-48 from the free-throw line for 72.9 percent. The Tigers shot 31-of-65 for 47.7 percent, 9-of-18 three pointers for 50 percent and 10-of-23 from the free-throw line for 43.5 percent.
The Saints grabbed 37 rebounds while the Tigers collected 43. OLLU forced 16 turnovers and committed 14.
The Saints face University of the Southwest on Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. at home.
