SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 1, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team beat the University of the Southwest (USW) 77-68 to extend the winning streak to four games. The Saints improve to 8-13 overall and 3-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs fall to 11-10 overall and 6-5 in conference. The Saints have won four straight conference matchups.
The Saints are 17-6 against Southwest but have lost the previous three games.
The Saints controlled the first half and led by as many as 15 points. Calvin Kintu (JR/London, England) closed the half with a team-leading 11 points and the Saints led by five. Both teams shot well from the field, with the Saints at 50 percent and the Mustangs at 42.3 percent.
OLLU maintained a comfortable lead for the first part of the second half. With five minutes remaining the Mustangs gained momentum and cut the lead to five points. The Saints responded and kept the lead steady. Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.), Michael Saladin (SR/Beaumont, Texas), and Victor Roper (FR/San Antonio, Texas) all hit their free throws in the closing minutes and the Saints won by nine points. With the win the Saints extend its season-high winning streak to four games.
Monzon led the Saints with 19 points, followed by Kintu with 13 and Saladin with 11. Monzon tallied a team-high 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Roper, Saladin and Kintu led the Saints with two assists each.
Joshua Harris led the Mustangs with 16 points. Thurbil Bile led the team with eight rebounds. Bile and Alex Pena tallied a team-high two assists each.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 24-of-54 shooting for 44.4 percent, 4-of-14 from three-point range for 28.6 percent and 25-of-29 from the free-throw line for 86.2 percent. USW shot 24-of-52 for 46.2 percent, 4-of-18 three pointers for 22.2 percent and 16-of-29 from the free-throw line for 55.2 percent.
The Saints grabbed 31 rebounds while the Mustangs collected 35. OLLU forced 22 turnovers and committed 17.
The Saints travel to Tyler, Texas, to play Texas College on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
